Capac, Almont qualify six, Imlay City four to individual regionals

TRI-CITY AREA — Capac and Almont advanced six grapplers each and Imlay City will send four to this Saturday's Division 3 individual wrestling regional hosted by Richmond High School.

They qualified with top-four weight class showings

last Saturday at a Richmond High School-based district.

Brian Kulman and Thomas Bolday led Capac with seconds that day. The former reached the 145-pound title encounter where he dropped a 16-1 verdict to Richmond's Brian Henke, while the latter gained admittance to the championship clash at 189 pounds where he fell by a 3-1 count to Yale's Mike Tyranski.

Dan Cornish, Ed Niemi and Pat White contributed thirds to Capac's cause. Cornish advanced to the 135-pound consolation final where he claimed a 6-5 win against Birch Run's Craig Kelly; Niemi reached the consolation final at 171 pounds where he pinned Armada's Dave Sheridan with 4:23 gone; and White gained admittance to the heavyweight consolation final where he picked up a 2-1 victory over Lakeville's Alex Walton.

Chris Bly completed the list of Capac placewinners with a fourth. Bly advanced to the 215-pound consolation final where he was pinned by Cros-Lex's Bryce Quinn with 5:34 gone.

Kevin Creger headlined for Almont that day. Creger reached the title encounter at 140 pounds where he registered a 4-3 triumph against Imlay City's Jake Newton.

Pat Finn, Josh Kunath and Derek Kopp provided Almont with thirds. Finn gained admittance to the 145-pound consolation final where he pinned Corey Downing with 4:22 gone; Kunath advanced to the consolation final at 152 pounds where he secured an 8-6 victory over Birch Run's Caleb Slavik; and Kopp reached the 189-pound consolation final where he garnered a 2-0 triumph against Flint Powers' Joe Sullivan.

Dylan Creger and Corey Downing rounded out the list of Almont placewinners with fourths. Creger gained admittance to the consolation final at 125 pounds where he dropped a 9-1 verdict to Richmond's Casey Martin; and Downing advanced to the 145-pound consolation final where he was pinned by teammate Pat Finn with 4:22 elapsed.

Sam Lyscas, Jake Newton and Matt Myers paced Imlay City with seconds. Lyscas reached the title encounter at 135 pounds where he dropped a 4-2 verdict to Richmond's Preston Treend and Jake Newton as mentioned earlier dropped a 4-3 title match to Creger of Almont. Meyers gained admittance to the 160-pound championship clash where he fell to Richmond's Roger Crump by a 13-4 count.

Andrew Pawlaczyk completed the list of Imlay City placewinners. Pawlaczyk advanced to the consolation final at 119 pounds where he dropped a 9-7 verdict to Richmond's Garret Edwards.
