Almont falls 58-52to Richmond rivals


Raiders' upset bid denied

ALMONT — Richmond escaped with a 58-52 road triumph against an upset-minded Almont varsity boys' basketball squad in a Blue Water Area Conference matchup last Friday night.

With the decision, Almont slips to 4-8 and 1-5.

In Friday's matchup, Almont grabbed an 8-7 edge after one quarter was history.

Quarter number two saw Richmond amass 12 points, while holding Almont to 10.

That staked Richmond to a 19-18 edge at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Richmond struck with a 16-11 third quarter advantage.

That hiked Richmond's lead to 35-29 at the 24-minute mark.

Richmond and Almont then hit for 23 points each during the last eight minutes of action, leaving the former with a 58-52 win to celebrate at night's end.

Nick Manchik (17 points, featuring one trey) led Richmond that evening. Nick Vansimaeys (15 points) made his presence felt as well.

Aaron May paced Almont with 19 points, draining five triples along the way. Cody Gelinski (13 points, including a trifecta) supplied the next highest Raider output.

Almont had six other players reach the scoring column. Their ranks consisted of Ben McNally (eight points), Brad Showalter (six), Brett McDonald and Brent Gibbs (two each) along with Aaron Benton and Dillon Melly (one apiece).
