Capac averts upset


Chiefs pull away for win over Spartans

TRI-CITY AREA — Capac used a 20-14 fourth quarter advantage to put away host Imlay City, 61-53, in a Blue Water Area Conference varsity boys' basketball battle last Friday night.

With the outcome, Capac goes to 7-2 overall and 4-1 versus BWAC rivals. Imlay City drops to 0-9 this season, including a 0-5 league showing.

In Friday's battle, Capac opened up a 17-12 cushion after one quarter was complete.

Quarter number two would see both sides play on even terms. It was there Capac and Imlay City hit for 11 points each.

That made it 28-23, Capac, at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Imlay City fought back with a 16-13 third quarter advantage.

That left Capac clinging to a 41-39 edge at the 24-minute mark.

Capac then outscored Imlay City 20-14 over the last eight minutes of action, leaving the floor with a 61-53 win to their credit.

Matt Burgess led Capac with 22 points, including two field goals of the three-point variety. The remaining Chief points went to Anthony Closurdo (16, featuring three treys), Josh Harvey (nine), Mitchell Parks (eight), Josh Messner (four, with a triple) and Sean O'Brien (two).

Eric Harbin (19 points, including four field goals of the three-point variety) and Aaron Thompson (15) proved Imlay City's toughest players to contain. The Spartans also received points courtesy of Matt Van Dyk (nine), PJ Crow and Adam Rauckis (three apiece) along with John Loveless and Ben Rodak (two each).
