Almont girls' cross country team ends year with 25th at state meet

ALMONT — Lauren Deneweth stopped the watch at 21:09.7 for 95th and Carlie Lawrence logged a 22:14.1 time for 149th, leading the Almont girls' cross country team to a 25th-place showing at the Division 3 state finals last Saturday.

Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, is where the action unfolded.

"I am extremely proud of our girls this year," Almont Coach Rick Filar said. "They worked hard and far exceeded my initial expectations," he noted.

"We qualified for the state finals for the second consecutive year with a lineup that consisted of five girls, including three freshmen, who are new to high school cross country. Lauren Deneweth is an amazing captain who brought the girls into a tight, supportive group. Six of our varsity girls return next year and are very eager to improve on this season's finish."

Hanover-Horton (63 points) took team honors. They were followed by Allendale (74 points), Benzie Central (110), Leslie (120), Jackson Lumen Christi (199), Kent City (210), Macomb Lutheran North (232), Lansing Catholic (275), Caro (283), Schoolcraft (285), Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian (386), Freeland (395), Portland (400), Essexville Garber (431), Ida (441), Leroy Pine River (452), Berrien Springs (459), Hillsdale (479), Manchester (489), Kingsley (519), Blissfield (531), Bad Axe (536), Sanford Meridian (540), Bangor (555), Almont (596), Whitmore Lake (649), Durand (729) and Lake Fenton (755).

Alyssa Leach generated the next quickest Almont clocking. Leach pulled up 181st in 22:46.7.

Kayla Johnson, 189th, 23:01.3; and Madison Lewis, 224th, 23:53; rounded out Almont's top-five finishers.
