Ten-year-old challenges us to believe in him

"You'd better not give up on us, because, in some cases, you're all we got."

That was a poignant one-liner from Dalton Sherman, who, in what I could only think of as speaking in true Reggie Dabbs style, delivered the keynote speech at a meeting of 17,000 teachers in Dallas in August of 2008. The statement was especially moving because the person delivering the address was a fifth grader.

Along with that challenge, ten-year old Dalton threw out this challenge; "I believe in me. Do you believe in me? Do you believe in my classmates? You better— 'cuz next week we're all 157,000 showing up in your classrooms."

A clip of Dalton Sherman's speech was shown at the beginning of the year breakfast meeting of the Imlay City Community Schools staff, which was held in the auditeria on September 1.

All staff members—not just classroom teachers, but support staff as well—were reminded to believe in themselves and their fellow workers as well as in their collective job—to encourage and equip young folks like Dalton. What we do, the group was reminded, is the most important job on this earth.

Schools Supt. Dr. Gary Richards challenged the rest of the staff to commit to telling, by word and deed, that we believe in the children we will be shepherding this year, that we believe in them, and in what they can achieve.

That morning I felt very blessed to be part of a team who takes that challenge very seriously; and I went away knowing that Dr. Richards believes in me, in what I can accomplish, what we can accomplish collectively, and that I can make a difference—even if it is in just one young person. That one person might very well be you or yours.

If you are a parent, a grandparent or guardian, or a child in this school district, welcome aboard. Enjoy the school year!
