IMLAY CITY — The Imlay City varsity boys' soccer team kicked off their 2009 campaign with a first-place finish last Saturday at the Eagle Challenge Tournament hosted by Lapeer East High School.

Imlay City opened their tournament run with a 3-0 win against Davison.

There Imlay City used a 1-0 opening half edge and a 2-0 second half advantage to prevail.

Martin Alvarez (via a penalty kick) notched Imlay City's lone goal during the opening half of action.

Zach Darnell (with 12:43 to play) and Alvarez (with 10 minutes remaining) accounted for Imlay City's second half tallies.

Jonathan Torres was the winning Imlay City goalkeeper. He was credited with three saves.

Imlay City then closed out their unbeaten day on the field, securing a 3-2 victory over Lapeer West.

This contest was scoreless throughout two halves of play, forcing a shootout to determine which side would prevail.

Sylvester Galeana, Torres and Alvarez notched Imlay City's shootout goals.

Torres was the winning Imlay City goaltender. He contributed six saves to the Spartans' cause.
