Outdoor Weekend features archery shoot
Limited spots and limited time to enter 3-D shoot
July 22, 2009
As I get older - as I seem to do every day - I find myself less willing to accept change. I like familiar places and things to do.
I understand that change is a constant and it must be that way, but some things just don't change and we wouldn't want to change them anyway. One of them being the date and admission price of the Woods-N-Water News Outdoor Weekend.
The first show was 23 years ago, and we are still putting together plans for yet another "Outdoor Weekend" at the same location, (the Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds, Imlay City) and like always the first weekend after Labor Day, September 11-13. Another area we are proud of is being able to keep the price to attend low, it remains $7.00 per adult and 12 and under free. It is also free to park.
We expect to improve this year's show, as we have tried to do each and every year. We promise to have timely and informative seminar speakers, quality outdoor merchandise to purchase, entertainment and lots of hands-on things to see and do. Like the past few shows we expect all available space to be sold out, with well over 175 exhibitors.
One of the new features this year is the Outdoor Weekend's 3-D Shoot, held each day of the show, offering a youth shoot on Friday, an open shoot on Saturday and a team shoot on Sunday. We're certain you'll find it to be entertaining.
X-Factor Archery has agreed to be our partners in this event, bringing their computerized 3-D pop-up and moving target system. This unique format will allow three divisions, (5-8, 9-11 and 12-15 age groups) of youth archers to compete for an individual championship. On Saturday it's time for the big boys to compete for cash and prizes, with $500 offered to the champion. And on Sunday the Team competition will provide some friendly competition among archery and range shooters from across the state. Some of the teams entered will be, Jay's Sporting Goods from Clare, Schupbach's Sporting Goods of Jackson, Bowman Outdoor Sports of Brown City, THS Sporting Center in Port Huron, VF Sports of Port Huron, Full Quiver of Goodells, Ed's Archery in Clio, Team Quest and Gilson's Hardware in Blissfield.
The team competition is by invitation only, while the Youth and Open Tournaments are first come, first serve entry. To enter call our friends at X-Factor Archery, 517-879-1001. Deadline to enter is September 4th although I should mention the shoot in those divisions is filling up fast.
We encourage you to visit our website at: www.outdoorweekend.net for more information.
Back by popular demand is The Ultimate Air Dog Games. Former Detroit Tiger pitcher, Milt Wilcox, will crown a new champion for what has become a respected national competition, with competitors from all over the country. If you have a dog that loves to jump, there is a chance he/she could find their way into the finals, by qualifying on Friday night.
It's hard to come to the Outdoor Weekend without a walk through the "Puppy Tent" loaded with hunting breed dogs for sale. Arkat Nutrition will also be on hand with free food samples once you've purchased your new pal. Oh, and don't be mad at us, if the kids find a pup too cute not to take home.
There is a lot for everyone in the entire family to enjoy, great carnival type food, as well as traditional buffalo burgers, turkey drumsticks, jerky and venison stick samples. And if you have a taste for chili, don't forget about the Chili Cook Off on Saturday. There is still time to enter if you like, but space is limited.
This 23rd annual show just wouldn't be the same without outdoor personalities like Terry McBurney, Dennis Neely, Richard Smith, Fred and Greg Abbas, Charlie Linblade, Steve Francis, and Ed Spinazzola. Nor could we do without our frontier and civil war encampments, they will all be back along with Randy's Hunting Center live gun auction on Sunday.
Of course, much of the credit to the success we have enjoyed has to be given to Tom Campbell, my business partner and Woods-N-Water News editor. Tom makes every effort to put together the kind of show you have become accustomed to enjoying. He is dedicated to keeping the costs low.
Hand-in-hand with Tom's efforts is the list of loyal sponsors, Exmark, (Beatrice, Nebraska), Lumberjack Shack (Imlay City), Ray C's Sports Center (Lapeer), Freeway Sports Center, (Fenton), Chapman's Sports (Lapeer), Arkat Nutrition, (Arkansas), and there are a few more we hope to add to our list of sponsors this year.
The Eastern Michigan Fairgrounds Board of Management has always been cooperative, as has the City of Imlay City and the police and fire departments. Plus the contribution our staff makes to the show is also a key contributing factor to our success.
Most of the plans are in place for this year's Outdoor Weekend, but as always, there are still many loose ends to tidy up. We are appreciative of our exhibitors, sponsors and show-goers, so mark your calendars for September, 11th, 12th and 13th. The Outdoor Weekend opens on Friday, (Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. and closes at 9 p.m., Saturday the show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
All of us here at the Woods-N-Water News look forward to seeing you all again, same place, same time and same price.
I hope you get a chance to visit this year's Outdoor Weekend, we've changed it just enough to make it even better.
After the Outdoor Weekend though, life will not change fast enough for me.
I'll escape making any plans at all, except those from the semi-comfort of my treestand.
