2009 All-Area girls' track team

TRI-CITY AREA — From the start of the season to its conclusion, these athletes names appeared on the sports pages regularly.

Here is a look at who made the 2009 edition of The Tri-City Times All-Area girls' track lineup and the credentials they produced along the way:

Name: Amanda Bryant

School: Capac

Event: High jump

Best effort: She generated a clearance of 4 feet 8 inches en route to a first during a 111.5-25.5 loss to visiting Blue Water Area Conference counterpart Imlay City on Thursday, April 16.

Top finishes: Bryant joined forces with Nick Osborn, Brian Kulman and Nichole Parks to win the high jump relay at the Almont Coed Relays; notched a three-way tie for third at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational; plus teamed up with Sarah Boltik for a high jump relay fifth at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays.

Name: Stephanie Francis

School: Imlay City

Event: Pole vault

Best effort: Francis cleared 8 feet, paving the way to a first Tuesday, May 19 at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School.

She also sported an identical clearance back on Friday, April 24 when she wound up second at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School.

Top finishes: Francis registered a first at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet; generated a second at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School; plus teamed up with Aimee Newsom to garner a third among pole vault relay entrants at the Tri-City Times Capac Relays.

Name: Courtney Martin

School: Imlay City

Event: Long jump

Best effort: She supplied a leap of 13 feet 7 1/4 inches en route to a fifth at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School on Tuesday, May 19.

Top finishes: Martin joined forces with Jennifer Jerzewski and Caley Campbell for a long jump relay third at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays; plus provided a fifth at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet.

Name: Cheyenne Jurick

School: Capac

Event: Long jump

Best effort: Jurick went 13 feet 6 1/2 inches, helping Capac's long jump relay lineup obtain a fifth Saturday, May 1 at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays.

Top finishes: She teamed up with Sarah Burgess, John Richards and Eric Withun for a long jump relay first at the Almont Coed Relays; took fourth by herself at the Hatchet Invitational hosted by Bad Axe High School; plus combined with Sarah Boltik and Sarah Burgess for a long jump relay fifth at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays.

Name: Millie Velez

School: Imlay City

Year: Junior

Event: Shot put

Best effort: Velez uncorked a toss measuring 30 feet 4 inches for first in a 76-59 road loss to Blue Water Area Conference rival Algonac on Tuesday, May 5.

Top finishes: She ranked second at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School; teamed up with Kelly Carland and Bailey Clark for a shot put relay second at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays; joined forces with Kelly Carland and Kristine Miller for a shot put relay third at the Mayville Wildcat Relays; plus registered a fifth at the North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet.

Name: Nina Dalecki

School: Capac

Event: Discus

Best effort: Dalecki let the weight implement fly 87 feet 4 inches for third in a 102-34 loss to visiting Blue Water Area Conference counterpart Yale on Tuesday, May 5.

Top finishes: She registered a fourth at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational; teamed up with Michelle Nason, Pat White and Frank Potczyka for a discus relay fourth at the Almont Coed Relays; plus joined forces with Katelyn Parent and Breann Card for a discus relay seventh at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays.

Name: Jennica Polzin

School: Capac

Event: 100-meter dash

Best effort: Polzin raced to a time of 12.91 seconds for second at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School on Tuesday, May 19.

Top finishes: She took seconds at the Hatchet Invitational hosted by Bad Axe High School and the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet; plus added a fifth at the O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions hosted by Marysville High School.

Name: Jennica Polzin

School: Capac

Event: 110-meter hurdles

Best effort: She supplied a time of 17.47 seconds for fifth at the Marysville High School-based O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.

Top finishes: Polzin teamed up with Sarah Burgess, Amanda Bryant and Cheyenne Jurick for a shuttle hurdle relay first at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays; furnished a fourth at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational; plus supplied fifths at a Division 3 regional hosted by Bad Axe High School and the Marysville High School-based O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.

Name: Kaitlynn Reeve

School: Capac

Event: 200-meter dash

Best effort: Reeve posted a time of 28.65 seconds for fifth at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School on Tuesday, May 19.

Top finishes: She pulled up fifth at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet.

Name: Michelle Marcial

School: Imlay City

Event: 300-meter hurdles

Best effort: She logged a clocking of 53.8 seconds en route to a first in an 82-54 win against Blue Water Area Conference rival Almont Wednesday, May 13 at Richmond High School.

Marcial also placed third in a 71-65 loss to BWAC counterpart Richmond that day.

Top finishes: She claimed thirds at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School and at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational.

Name: Cassidy Downing

School: Almont

Event: 400-meter dash

Best effort: Downing generated a time of 1:04.5 for first at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School on Saturday, May 16.

Top finishes: She earned the distinction of race pacesetter at a New Haven High School-based Division 3 regional; plus obtained a fourth at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School.

Other credentials: Downing also competed in the event at the Division 3 state finals.

Comstock Park High School is where the action unfolded.

Name: Lauren Deneweth

School: Almont

Event: 800-meter run

Best effort: Deneweth supplied a clocking of 2:26.95 en route to a fourth at the O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions on Thursday, May 21.

Marysville High School is where the action unfolded.

Top finishes: Deneweth took race honors at the North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet; pulled up second at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School; furnished a fourth at the Marysville High School-based O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions; ranked fifth at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School; plus added a 10th at the Comstock Park High School-based Division 3 state finals.

Name: Marie Burkland

School: Almont

Event: 1600-meter run

Best effort: Burkland shattered her own school record by a considerable margin of 11.75 seconds, stopping the watch at 5:13.35 en route to a fifth at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School on Saturday, May 30.

Top finishes: She claimed firsts at the North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet and at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School; pulled up second at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet; plus provided a fifth (good enough to earn All-State accolades) at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School.

Other credentials: Burkland also qualified for the event but opted not to compete at the Marysville High School-based O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.

Name: Marie Burkland

School: Almont

Event: 3200-meter run

Best effort: Burkland furnished a clocking of 11:59.03 en route to a second at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School on Tuesday, May 19.

Top finishes: She pulled up first at the North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet; plus garnered seconds at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School and at a New Haven High School-based Division 3 regional.

Other credentials: Burkland competed in the event at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School.

She also qualified for the 3200 run, but opted not to participate at the Marysville High School-based O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.

Team: Taelor Webb, Caley Campbell, Michelle Marcial and Andrea Gould

School: Imlay City

Event: 400-meter relay

Best effort: Though they did not run together often, their results speak for themselves when the lineup finally did join forces.

That well-taken point was underlined when they raced to a winning time of 54.41 seconds Tuesday, May 19 at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School.

Top finishes: The lineup of Webb, Campbell, Marcial and Gould notched a first-place finish at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet.

Algonac High School is where the action unfolded.

An Imlay City team consisting of Cassondra Durfee, Kassie Brozowski, Gould and Marcial furnished a third at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational; plus the same squad added a fifth at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School.

Team: Taelor Webb, Courtney Martin, Caley Campbell and Andrea Gould.

School: Imlay City

Event: 800-meter relay

Best effort: Imlay City Coach Jim Reinke fielded several lineups throughout the course of the 2009 campaign. And the one constant with each of those quartets was success.

Imlay City was at their quickest Friday, May 15 when a group consisting of Webb, Martin, Campbell and Gould crossed the finish-line sixth at a Division 2 regional meet hosted by Marysville High School.

Top finishes: A team featuring Webb, Martin, Campbell and Gould registered thirds at the Bad Axe High School-based Hatchet Invitational and Blue Water Area Conference League Meet hosted by Algonac High School; a lineup of Taylor Lee, Webb, Martin and Campbell provided a third at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays; a team of Jaclyn Van Dyk, Martin, Campbell and Gould furnished a sixth at the Lapeer County Meet hosted by North Branch High School; plus a lineup of Webb, Martin, Campbell and Gould contributed a sixth at a Marysville High School-based Division 2 regional.

Team: Cassidy Downing, Scotti Langley, Marie Burkland and Lauren Deneweth.

School: Almont

Event: 1600-meter relay.

Best effort: A team consisting of Burkland, Downing, Deneweth and Langley claimed a second at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School on Saturday, May 16.

Top finishes: A team of Cassidy Downing, Scotti Langley, Marie Burkland and Lauren Deneweth set the pace at the North Branch High School-based Lapeer County Meet; a lineup comprised of Eric Ambrosiewicz, Cody Corbin, Downing and Deneweth pulled up first at the Almont Coed Relays; a team of Downing, Deneweth, Burkland and Langley generated seconds at the Lake Fenton Relays, Tri-City Times Capac Relays and at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School.

Other credentials: Almont also earned the right to compete in the event at the Division 3 state meet hosted by Comstock Park High School.

That day Ally Matthews filled in for Marie Burkland, who focused her attention on the 1600 run and 3200 relay races. Burkland would set school records in both of those events by considerable margins.

Team: Ally Matthews, Scotti Langley, Lauren Deneweth and Marie Burkland.

School: Almont

Event: 3200-meter relay

Best effort: The 3200 relay of Ally Matthews, Scotti Langley, Lauren Deneweth and Marie Burkland pulled up 10th with a school-record setting time of 9:59.33 at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School on Saturday, May 30.

The lineup's effort smashed the former mark of 10:06.94 they ran Thursday, May 21 at the O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.

Top finishes: A team consisting of Dylan Creger, Josh Klebba, Lauren Deneweth and Marie Burkland set the pace at the Almont Coed Relays; Carlie Lawrence, Scotti Langley, Deneweth and Burkland garnered a second at The Tri-City Times Capac Relays; a team consisting of Matthews, Langley, Deneweth and Burkland supplied seconds at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School; at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet; and the O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions hosted by Marysville High School; plus the lineup of Matthews, Langley, Burkland and Deneweth contributed a 10th-place showing at the Comstock Park High School-based Division 3 state finals.

Second team- Sandrine Simon, Dryden high jump; Sarah Burgess, Capac, pole vault and long jump; Sam Gomez, Almont, shot put and discus; Cassidy Downing, Almont, 100-meter dash; Taelor Webb, Imlay City, 200-meter dash; Lauren Deneweth, Almont, 400-meter dash and 1600-meter run; Marie Burkland, Almont, 800-meter run; Mandy Lacertosa, Imlay City, 3200-meter run; and Capac 400-meter relay of Kaitlynn Reeve, Amanda Bryant, Stephanie Meyer and Jade Detroyer; Imlay City 1600-meter relay of Taylor Lee, Jaclyn Van Dyk, Caley Campbell and Taelor Webb.

Honorable mention- Jennifer Jerzewski, Imlay City, high jump; Kelsey Murphy, Almont, shot put and discus; Jennica Polzin, Capac, pole vault; Jaclyn Van Dyk, Imlay City, 400-meter dash; Scotti Langley, Almont, 800 and 1600-meter runs; and Selina Paupert, Dryden, 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

Coach of the Year- Jamey Wade, who directed Almont a first at the Almont Coed Relays; a second at a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School; a fourth at the Lapeer County Meet; and a fifth at the Algonac High School-based Blue Water Area Conference League Meet; earns Tri-City Times All-Area Coach of the Year accolades.
