Burkland fifth in state as 1600 record tumbles
Almont distance ace also anchors 3200 relay to new school mark
June 03, 2009ALMONT — The Almont girls' track team managed four points on the way to a five-way tie for 42nd place last Saturday at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School.
Frankenmuth's 68-point total paced the field assembled. They were followed by Benzie Central (48 points), Albion (39), Flint Hamady and Shelby (30 each), Schoolcraft (26.5), Standish-Sterling (25), Jackson Lumen Christi (24), Leroy-Pine River (21), St. Charles (19), Michigan Center, Grand Rapids West Catholic and Allendale (18 apiece), Stockbridge (16), Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (13), Delton Kellogg and Bronson (11 each), Manistee and Durand (10 apiece), Hanover-Horton, Clinton, Millington, Portland, Lansing Catholic and Union City (nine each), Laingsburg, Brooklyn Columbia Central, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Macomb Lutheran North, Beaverton and Reed City (eight apiece), Hillsdale, Hemlock and Watervliet (six each), Hart, Lakeview, Bridgeport, Grandville Calvin Christian, Saginaw Valley Lutheran, Elk Rapids and Kent City (five apiece), Almont, Adrian Madison, Charlevoix, Freeland and Erie Mason (four each), Leslie, Kingsley, Houghton Lake and Reese (three apiece), Wyoming Godwin Heights, Onsted, Jonesville, St. Louis, Carrollton, Shepherd, Whitmore Lake and Saginaw Swan Valley (two each), Olivet, Bangor, Roscommon and Wyoming Kelloggsville (one apiece) along with Blissfield (one-half point).
Marie Burkland shattered her own school record by a considerable margin of 11.65 seconds, stopping the watch at 5:13.35, en route to a fifth among 1600-meter run entrants to lead Almont that day.
For her performance, Burkland earned All-State accolades (given to the top-eight finishers in each event).

The 3200 relay of Ally Matthews, Scotti Langley, Lauren Deneweth and Burkland supplied the next best Almont showing, pulling up 10th with a school record-setting time of 9:59.33. The lineup's effort smashed the former mark of 10:06.94 they ran Thursday, May 21 at the O'Connor Realty Meet of Champions.
Deneweth also added a 10th among 800-meter run entrants that day. Her finish time, estimated at 2:25 by Almont Coach Jamey Wade, was a little more than a second over the 2:23.86 clocking needed to secure a top-eight event showing.
