ALMONT — Less than a year after stamped concrete was installed to replace deteriorating brick pavers downtown, repairs are being made to portions of the new cement.

Last July, the Almont Downtown Development Authority paid $44,500 to replace the old brick pavers with stamped concrete, believing it would be a more durable solution to pavers, which are prone to shifting.

This week, workers from Stamped Concrete Specialists of Metamora were back in town, making nearly $16,000 in repairs to portions of the concrete that sustained "winter damage," said DDA Director Nancy Boxey.

Boxey did not lay specific blame for the damage, but said the cost of repairs is being shared by the DDA, the contractor and the Village of Almont.

Village council members agreed Tuesday to contribute $2,000 toward the repairs; $3,000 less than the amount that had been sought by the DDA.

As a result, the DDA will pay $7,520 for the repairs, with the contractor absorbing the remaining cost of $6,380. In addition, the contractor will reseal the repairs at no additional cost, said Boxey.

"All parties agreed that the responsibility is shared," Boxey said. "The contractor has stepped up to the plate to help resolve this issue."

Boxey said some of the cement had not been installed properly, while other damage was incurred when DPW workers removed snow over the winter months.

She added that about 200 salvaged brick pavers inscribed with the names of local families, will be reset at the entrance to the Pocket Park at the southeast corner of Main and St. Clair streets. The inscribed bricks were purchased by the families for a 1999 sidewalk project.

Boxey asked that those who retrieved their family bricks and would like to have them reset, should return them to the DDA office on Main Street.
