Five valedictorians in Almont
Top Ten graduates in Class of 2009 make plans for future
May 20, 2009ALMONT —Five co-valedictorians and one salutatorian will share the spotlight at commencement exercises at 5 p.m. on June 7 for the Almont High School Class of 2009.
Co-valedictorian Courtney Braun is the daughter of Jeff and Corinna Braun. She is an active member in the National Honor Society, where she serves as treasurer. Courtney also participated in band for eight years, playing the flute.
Courtney was a member of the varsity tennis team for four years and received an honorable mention in the conference. She played on the varsity soccer team for two years and the varsity volleyball team for two years, receiving First Team All Conference and Athlete of the Week. She also earned a spot on the All State Academic Achievements list.
After graduation, Courtney plans to major in mathematics at Saginaw Valley State University this fall. Her ultimate goal is to teach math at the high school level.
Kristen Brinker, co-valedictorian, is the daughter of Dale and Gail Brinker. Kristen participated on the varsity tennis team for the past four years and was a member of the volleyball team throughout high school, where she was the setter in the fall of her senior year.
Kristen is a member of the National Honor Society and has been involved in community service including playing euchre at a local assisted living center several times. She also plays the flute in the high school band.
This fall, Kristen will attend Saginaw Valley State University to major in athletic training.
Co-valedictorian Marie Burkland is the daughter of Christopher and Joyce Burkland.
Throughout her high school career, Marie earned Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Academic Awards, and was a four year member of the cross country and track teams. In both sports, she served as team captain and held school records along with qualifying for state competition.
Marie enjoys music as well, and participated in the marching/concert band as the clarinet section leader. She has participated in solo and ensemble and two honors bands.
Marie served on the student council, and held the positions of class vice-president and secretary for two years each. She was an active member and secretary of the National Honor Society.
Marie plans to major in chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall.
The fourth co-valedictorian is Taylor Glinski, the daughter of Greg and Lori Glinski.
Throughout high school Taylor was also a member of the marching band and was named the trumpet section leader her junior year. She also played on the varsity volleyball team for two years.
Taylor was a member of the National Honor Society and is currently coordinating a fundraiser to help cystic fibrosis patients. She's also a finalist in the National Merit Scholar Competition.
Taylor plans to major in English at the University of Michigan this fall.
Rounding out the co-valedictorians is Stephen Savonne. He is the son of Douglas and Brenda Savonne.
Stephen competed in varsity wrestling and cross country for four years, serving as captain for both teams this past year. He has also completed three years of varsity track and one year of JV tennis.
During his freshmen and senior years, Stephen served on student council and was elected to serve as president of the National Honor Society for the 2008-09 school year.
A member of the marching band, Stephen played the trombone and was the low brass section leader.
Stephen was admitted into the United States Air Force Academy, which he will attend in the fall. He has yet to decide upon a major.
Salutatorian Matthew Randall is the son of Timothy and Michelle Randall. During his time at Almont High School, Matthew maintained a 3.94 grade point average.
In addition, Matthew received a top ten award every year along with several other awards from numerous classes.
Matt is considering majoring in history at Hillsdale College, which he will attend in the fall.
Rounding out the top ten students of Almont High School's Class of 2009 are Andrew T. Wernette, Melissa K. Wilber, Desirae E. Salswedel, and Lisa M. Marcath.
