DRYDEN — The Dryden boys' track team gave a good account of themselves, bringing home a second-place finish last Saturday from a Division 4 regional hosted by Brown City High School.

When the final scores were added up, Unionville Sebewaing Area's 121-point total proved best. They were followed by Dryden (103 points), Ubly and Brown City (83 apiece), Genesee (65), Peck (51), Mayville (44), Kingston (33), Deckerville (27), Carsonville-Port Sanilac (24), Akron-Fairgrove (11), Harbor Beach (nine), North Huron (six) and Port Hope (three).

The top-two placewinners in each event, plus anyone who bests a state set clocking, height or distance advances to the Division 4 state finals. That meet is slated for May 30 at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern High School.

Al Clark, shot put, 47 feet 1 inch; Chad Butler, pole vault (12 feet 6 inches) and long jump (20 feet 10 1/4 inches); and Douglas Ladner, 300-meter hurdles, 41.43 seconds; led Dryden with individual event firsts.

The Dryden 800 (Matt Lynch, Eric Tietz, Butler and Ladner) and 1600 (Brandon Gierman, Geno Volante, Lynch and Ladner) relays also emerged victorious. They were timed in 1:34.71 and 3:38.08, respectively.

Joe Battisti, high jump, 6 feet; gave Dryden an individual event second.

The 400-meter relay of Tietz, Volante, Battisti and Butler wound up second as well. They stopped the watch at 46.41 seconds.

Lynch had the other Dryden state-qualifying effort. His 400 dash clocking of 52.09 seconds, good enough for fourth, proved swift enough to advance to the finals time-wise.

Ladner, 110-meter hurdles, 16.22 seconds; just missed advancing to the state finals with a third.

Clark, discus, 122 feet 11 inches; and Gierman, 800-meter run, 2:11.32; contributed Dryden's other individual event fourths that day.

Battisti, long jump, 19 feet 2 3/4 inches; managed the lone Dryden sixth.

A 3200 relay consisting of James Kaliszewski, Evan Huck, Collin Stone and Gierman rounded out the list of Dryden placewinners with an eighth. They were timed in 9:28.7 en route.
