Almont nets state final berth


Raiders uphold team tradition, finish second in region

ALMONT — The Almont girls' tennis team netted a second-place finish last Friday at a Division 4 regional it hosted.

When the final scores were added up, Grosse Pointe University Liggett posted a pacesetting 27-point total. Almont pulled up second, thanks to an output of 20 points.

Those two schools move on to the Division 4 state finals scheduled for Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 at Jenison High School.

Nine other teams competed at Friday's regional. Their ranks consisted of Flint Powers (15 points), Bloomfield Hills Academy of Sacred Heart (12), Armada (10), Madison Heights Bishop Foley (seven), Imlay City and Royal Oak Shrine (six each), Lake Fenton (three), Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (two) and Clawson (one).

Courtney Braun headlined for Almont that day, earning the distinction of fourth singles champion. Braun capped her unbeaten run with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at the expense of Madison Heights Bishop Foley's Andrea Aiuto.

Michelle Fox along with Jill Zygmontowicz and Kelsea Offner provided Almont with second-place finishes. Fox gained admittance to the second singles title tilt where she dropped a 1-6, 1-6 verdict to Grosse Pointe University Liggett's, while Zygmontowicz and Offner fell by a 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 count to the Grosse Pointe University Liggett combination of Caroline Charbonier and Mary Nehra in the battle for fourth doubles honors.

The remainder of Almont's starting lineup also gave a good account of themselves at the regional level. Bobbi Enos (first singles), Claire Turvill (third singles), Christian Simian and Jaime Ligon (first doubles), Kristen Brinker and Melissa Wilber (second doubles) plus Laurie Yaklin and Brooke Streber (third doubles) all were flight semifinalists.

Anita Almendarez paced Imlay City that day. Almendarez was a semifinalist at first singles.
