Imlay City, Capac square off in First Annual Alumni hoop games
Both schools win, raising $2,400 for Project Graduation
March 04, 2009TRI-CITY AREA — Host Imlay City beat Capac three games to none in the First Annual Imlay City versus Capac Alumni Basketball encounters last Saturday.
The games raised approximately $2,400 which will be divided evenly between the two schools.
"The alumni games were a big success," Imlay City's Rick Lee, one of the tournament organizers, commented. "It raised a lot of money which will be used to benefit project graduation at both schools," he noted.
Capac's Tom and Shanen Mailloux, who helped run the event along with Lee, said they were uncertain how big of a crowd the event would attract.
"There is a lot of basketball games being played at this time of year," Tom said. "However, both communities turned out in good numbers to watch the games," he noted.
"It exceeded our expectations. We hope to have it again next year."

Here is a rundown of the games contested that evening:
1988 and before graduates
In the opener of the tripleheader, Imlay City's graduates from 1988 and before earned a 60-55 win against Capac.
There Imlay City took a 35-29 lead at the halftime break.
Capac then started the second half with a 20-15 run encompassing a 13:15 span.
That left Imlay City clinging to a 50-49 edge with 6:45 showing on the clock.
Imlay City then responded to the challenge presented them with a 7-0 run.
When that stretch of hoops drew to a close, Imlay City held a 57-49 lead. There now was 4:32 to play.
Capac outscored Imlay City 6-3 the rest of the way, only to fall by a 60-55 count when the final buzzer sounded.
Matt Shene (13) and Rick Lee (11) led Imlay City with double digit point totals. They were backed by Paul Meier (nine points), Marv Benthem (eight), Steve Upleger (six), Ryan McFall (five), Doug Van Dyk and Dennis Van Dyk (three each) along with Kelson Zehr (two).
Tim Thompson and Doug Hughes rounded out Imlay City's winning roster.
For Capac, Chris Lang's nine-point effort set the pace. The Chiefs also received points courtesy of Bryant Kersten and Joe Bohr (seven apiece), Ron Kaufman and Pete Chavarria (six each), Scott Mailloux and Tom Kavanagh (five apiece), Tom Mailloux and Eddie Rodriguez (three each) plus Raul Rosas and Merle Burgess (two apiece).
Rudy Rosas, Abel Rosas, Mike Rosas and Chris Mailloux also suited up for Capac.
1989 to 1996 graduates
The second of three contests saw Imlay City turn back Capac, 65-33.
There Imlay City charged out to a 40-18 halftime cushion.
Imlay City followed it up with a 25-15 second half advantage, putting the finishing touches on a 65-33 victory.
Bill Lengemann topped Imlay City with 11 points. The remaining Spartan points went to Brian Franey and John Allen (nine each), Alex Lengemann (eight), Jeremy Aguinaga (seven), Josh VanDerPloeg (four), Tom Pauly and Matt Topie (three apiece), Ted Reintjes, Dave Finkbeiner, Mike Toutant, Louie Aguinaga and Craig Badder (two each) along with Brian Toutant (one).
Greg Amador paced Capac with nine points. He was backed by Joel Ebner and William Maday (four points apiece) plus Terry Hays, Chad Hoover, Brad Keegan, Joe Hadacz, Brent Boers, Mike Schaefer, Sean Kriesch and Brian Maday (two).
Mike Maday and Roger Pelletier also appeared on Capac's roster.
1997 to 2005 graduates
In the last of three contests, Imlay City left the floor with a 58-38 triumph against Capac.
There Imlay City grabbed a 32-23 edge at the halftime break.
Capac then came out strong to start the second half, closing the gap to 39-37 with 7:09 remaining.
However, Imlay City bounced back with a 19-1 run during the last seven minutes-plus of action.
That enabled Imlay City to register a 58-38 triumph at night's end.
Greg Prendergast led Imlay City with 10 points. The remaining Spartan points went to Todd Jackman and Steve Saunders (eight points each), Pat Patterson, David Kircus and Mike Hutchins (five apiece), Matt Pauly, Matt Timmer, Nate Thompson and Eric Hibbler (three each), Nick Thompson and Eric Timmer (two apiece) along with Joel Pittenger (one).
Matt Halbach and Adam Parsch also appeared on Imlay City's roster.
Chad Lietz paced Capac's scoring attack, depositing 12 points through the twines. The Chiefs also received points courtesy of Jeff Stiefel (seven), Jamie Harvey (five), Brian Murray (four), Craig Bond (three), Isaac Browning, Matt Murray and Kurt Waltzer (two each) along with Jason Maday (one).
Tom Jones, Enrique Lopez, Josh Johnston and Mike Gutierrez also suited up for Capac.
