IMLAY CITY — Construction has begun on a new "fuel center" at the southwest corner of the Imlay City Plaza, 1821 S. Cedar St. (M-53).

Kroger of Michigan is building the gas station, which will feature a 116-square-foot kiosk and a 24-foot-by-120-foot fuel canopy for four duel-sided gas pumps.

JGD Associates of Avon Lake, Ohio presented a site plan for special land use at the 16-acre Imlay City Plaza in April of 2008.

The project was later approved by the Imlay City Planning Commission with certain contingencies, including moving the gas station's driveway access to a position east of Cedar Street.

The existing driveway off Cedar Street provides access to businesses within the plaza and to the Lapeer County Bank & Trust branch, immediately to the south.

Because the driveways would have been opposite one another, the potential for traffic gridlock and safety issues would have been considerable.
