Imlay City bests Capac, 61-45


Second quarter shutout keys the Spartans' win over Chiefs

TRI-CITY AREA — Imlay City left the floor with a 61-45 road win against Capac to their credit in a Blue Water Area Conference varsity boys' basketball confrontation last Friday night.

With the outcome, Imlay City improves to 5-2 and 3-1. Capac falls to 4-4 and 2-2.

In Friday's meeting, Imlay City opened up a 17-15 edge after one quarter had ended.

Quarter number two saw Imlay City manage nine points and Capac generate none.

That left Imlay City holding a 26-15 cushion at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Imlay City maintained their lead.

Imlay City and Capac hit for 14 points each during the third quarter of play, leaving the former with a 40-29 cushion at the 24-minute mark.

Imlay City then outscored Capac 21-16 from that point on, assuring themselves of a 61-45 win at night's end.

The victorious Imlay City side received points from eight sources. Their ranks consisted of Blaine Goertler (14, including two field goals of the three-point variety), Aaron Thompson (12), Adam Van Dyk (eight), Eric Ebert and Darren Saunders (seven each), Alex Maldonado (five), Brad Kramek (four), Andrew Harbin and Steve Lesniak (two).

Rick Jones paced Capac. He finished with 16 points, draining a pair of treys along the way. The Chiefs also had Matt Burgess (12 points), Jon Botwin (five, with a triple), Joe Johnson (five), Josh Harvey (three) plus Mike Opificius and Anthony Closurdo (two apiece) connect.
