Almont averts an upset attempt taking a 53-50 victory at Capac

TRI-CITY AREA — Visiting Almont averted an upset bid, escaping with a 53-50 win against Capac in a Blue Water Area Conference varsity girls' basketball battle last Thursday night.

With the decision, Almont goes to 3-3 and 2-0. Capac drops to 1-7 and 0-2.

In Thursday's battle, Almont jumped out to an 18-10 advantage after one quarter was done.

Quarter number two saw Capac deposit nine points through the twines, while allowing Almont eight.

That left Almont holding a 26-19 advantage at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Almont bounced back with a 15-10 third quarter edge.

That hiked Almont's cushion to 41-29 at the 24-minute mark.

The fourth quarter, though, would belong to Capac.

It was there Capac put together a 21-12 rally, only to fall by a narrow 53-50 count when the final second ticked off the clock.

Nikki Heim collected 22 points, with five triples, and Tasha Evans supplied 21 to lead Almont. Their remaining points went to Jessica Moceri (six), Taylor Dziewit (two) along with Katie Porter and Megan May (one each).

Jennica Polzin put up Capac's best numbers that evening. She finished with a 22-point performance, draining three trifectas along the way.

In addition to that, Polzin was credited with 14 steals.

Gabby Sabatino posted the next highest Capac point output, amassing 14. The Chiefs also received points courtesy of Taylor Sinda (seven), Ashley Mousseau (five, featuring a trey) and Courtney Baldwin (two).
