Capac falls short of title


Green Devils slip past Chiefs in Moore Tourney final

CAPAC — Host Brown City earned a 55-51 win against Capac in the championship matchup of the Harry C. Moore Boys' Varsity Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, December 30.

With the outcome, Brown City ups its mark to 5-1 overall. Capac watches their record drop to 2-2 this season.

"We played a great game," Capac Coach Bob Shoemaker said. "The kids fought hard to the end," he noted.

In Tuesday's matchup, Brown City took a 21-14 advantage after one quarter was complete.

Quarter number two saw Capac bounce back with a 15-13 edge.

That left Brown City holding a 34-29 edge at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Capac continued to inch closer.

Aided by an 11-8 third quarter edge, Capac whittled their deficit to 42-40 at the 24-minute mark.

Brown City then outscored Capac 13-11 during the final eight minutes of play, closing out a 55-51 win.

A.J. Burton (15 points, including three field goals of the three-point variety) led Brown City. Jack McPhail (12 points, featuring three treys) and Tom Reintjes (10) hit for double figure outputs as well.

Rick Jones paced Capac with a 23-point performance. He drained three triples along the way.

Capac had five other players reach the scoring column. Their ranks consisted of Matt Burgess (11 points), Jon Botwin (six, including a trifecta), Josh Messner (five, featuring a trey), Anthony Closurdo (four) and Joe Johnson (two).

All-Tournament team - A.J. Burton, Brown City; Jack McPhail, Brown City; Rick Jones, Capac; Matt Burgess, Capac; Andrew Huffman, Marlette; and Deane Baker, North Branch.
