TRI-CITY AREA — The Capac and Imlay City wrestling teams wound up second and third, respectively, last Saturday at the Marlette Invitational.
Capac opened their five-match tournament stint with a 53-21 win against Lutheran North. That was followed by a 76-0 victory over a team consisting of wrestlers from several of the tournament teams; a 66-17 triumph against Cass City; and a 48-31 semifinal win over Imlay City.
Capac then bowed out with a 37-36 title match setback to Marlette.
Brian Kulman (140), Thomas Bolday (171/189) and Shawn Kaiser (215) led Capac with 5-0 records that day.
For his effort, Bolday earned MVP of the upper weight classes.
Arthur Andrade, who went 3-0 at 189 pounds, and Pat White, who won his lone match at heavyweight, were the other Capac grapplers who wound up with a spotless mat standings.
Gideon Gaiter (119), Joshua Kaiser (125), Brandon Schalm (130) and Andrew McDunnah (160) contributed 4-1 records to Capac's cause.
Cody Neuman (112), Jeff Connell (145) and Derek Gottschalk (152) provided Capac with 3-2 mat marks.
Heavyweight Tom Ray added a 2-2 record to Capac's cause.
Imlay City began their five-match tournament stint with a 60-18 win against North Branch. That was followed by a 58-15 victory over Brown City; a 42-30 loss to Marlette; and a 48-31 semifinal setback to Capac.
Those results earned Imlay City a consolation match appearance where they squared off versus Lutheran North.
When the final scores were added up, Imlay City had registered a 48-31 triumph against Lutheran North.
Mike Galanos (112), Sam Lsycas (119) and Kevin Ahrens (135) led Imlay City with 5-0 mat marks that day.
For his performance, Ahrens was voted MVP of the lower weight classes.
Josh Scillian (103) and Josh Timmer (285) were the other Imlay City grapplers who gave good accounts of themselves that day. They finished 4-1 each.
With the results, Capac improves to 12-2 overall. Imlay City now stands at 10-4 this season.
