December 10, 2008 ALMONT — The Almont wrestling team tallied 145.5 points en route to a third-place showing last Saturday at the Byron Invitational.
When the final scores were added up, Marlette's 173.5-point output proved best. They were followed by Millington (149 points), Almont (145.5), Byron (104), Lake Fenton (87.5), Lapeer East's 'B' team (49.5), Brown City (41), Memphis (38) and Burton Bentley (36).
Taylor Lawrence, Nick Vassallo and Josh Kunath led Almont with firsts that day. Lawrence closed out his title run with an 11-1 win against Lake Fenton's Brett Smith at 119 pounds; Vassallo capped his championship-producing stint with a pin 2:38 into his 140-pound clash with Millington's Eric Thibeault; and Kunath ended his title run with a pin at the 5:16 mark of his match with Marlette's Justin Shaver at 160 pounds.
Dylan Creger provided Almont with a second. He reached the 130-pound championship collision where he dropped a 13-6 verdict to Lake Fenton foe Rob Copeland.
Kevin Creger notched the lone Almont third that day. Creger advanced to the consolation final at 130 pounds where he earned a 6-4 win against Brown City's Mike Kohler.
A group consisting of Corey Downing, Steve Sabbe, Tyler Vassallo, Nick Ouillette and Derek Kopp added fourths to Almont's cause. Downing's day on mats concluded when he was pinned by Brown City 135-pound counterpart Randy Bandemer with 2:45 elapsed; Sabbe wrapped up his run at 145 pounds when he was pinned by Lapeer East's 'B' team's Landon Hadaway with 4:06 gone; Vassallo's day on the mats finished when he was pinned by Lapeer East 'B' team 145-pound adversary Isaac Joseph with 2:18 elapsed; Ouillette capped his run at 160 pounds when he was pinned by Lapeer East 'B' team's Eric Strickler with 22 seconds gone; and Kopp's day on the mats ended with an 8-6 setback to Burton Bentley's Alan Ackley at 171 pounds.
