November 05, 2008 CAPAC AREA — Residents in St. Clair County may not be able to dial 911 from their Verizon land lines.
A press release issued at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 6 says Verizon customers are unable to call 911 due to a fiber cut.
Jeannnie Posey, public information officer for the St. Clair County Office of Emergency Management says the phone companies don't yet know the exact location of the cut, but are working to resolve the situation. Requests that fire departments man their stations are in effect, Posey adds.
"If a citizen is experiencing an emergency, they should try to dial 911 as many lines are being re-routed," Posey says in the press release. "If a citizen is unable to reach a 911 operator, they are being asked to call or go to their local fire stations when ability allows."
Officials are uncertain when the repairs will be made but will issue updates as they become available.
