Almont’s Marie Burkland nears the end of her race at the Div. 3 state finals.
November 05, 2008
ALMONT — Lauren Deneweth stopped the watch at 20:31.3 en route to a 92nd and Scotti Langley notched a 20:39.6 time for 104th, leading the Almont girls' cross country team to a 19th-place finish last Saturday at the Division 3 state finals.

Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, is where the action unfolded.

When the final scores were tallied, Benzie Central (91 points) earned the distinction of team champion. They were followed by Leslie (120 points), Allendale (122), Jackson Lumen Christi (164), Hanover Horton (178), Kent City (218), Lutheran North (225), Schoolcraft (271), Grand Rapids West Catholic (294), Portland (301), Clare (329), Lansing Catholic (331), Cass City (393), Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (395), Caro (402), Ida (474), Michigan Center (475), Almont (478), Freeland (510), Midland Bullock Creek (531), Buchanan (540), Vassar (549), Standish Sterling (589), Blissfield (629), Lake Fenton (633) and Delton Kellogg (684).

Almont would have placed even higher that day, likely winding up in 14th place, were it not for some misfortune one of their runners encountered during the closing stages of the race.

"Marie Burkland, our number one runner and team captain, is doing fine this evening after a trip to a medical center at Michigan International Speedway and receiving an I.V.," Almont Coach Rick Filar informed us. "She was running extremely strong today and ranked somewhere between 15th and 17th about 2.5 miles into the 3.1 mile race," he noted.

"Marie's goal in her final cross country race was to finish in the top-30 and make All-State. Unfortunately, the unexpected happened and her body rebelled. Being the competitor she is, Marie somehow made her way to the finish-line (taking 124th with a 20:54.4 clocking) before collapsing. She is an awesome kid and we are disappointed for her this evening."

Carlie Lawrence, 96th, 21:18.9; and Deniz Kyte, 236th, 25:36.4; rounded out Almont's top-five runners.
