ALMONT — The Almont boys' soccer team gave eighth-ranked Lutheran North all it could handle and then some, before dropping a 3-2 homefield verdict in a Division 3 district semifinal confrontation last Wednesday afternoon.

With the decision, Almont sees a 14-5-1 season draw to a close.

In Wednesday's confrontation, Lutheran North reached the scoreboard first. That happened when a Lutheran North shot found the back of the net with 19:32 showing on the first half clock.

The Lutheran North lead would hold up 14:18.

Ben McNally, of Almont, then made it a 1-1 ballgame when he capitalized on a pass from Martin Camaj 5:14 prior to halftime.

His tally would prove the last either side collected during half number one.

The opening minutes of the second half would see Lutheran North go back out on top.

Aided by a pair of converted shots with 38:13 and 32:01 remaining, respectively, Lutheran North was able to forge a 3-1 lead.

It looked as though Lutheran North would pull away for the win. Or so the Mustangs must have thought anyway.

The next 11 minutes-plus would belong to Almont. It was there the Raiders threatened several times to pull closer.

That led to a penalty shot attempt by Connor Young with 20:13 left. He saw to it that the opportunity would not be wasted, burying the shot.

It was now a 3-2 ballgame. The outcome was up for grabs again.

Almont would get several chances to acquire the equalizer the rest of the way, only to be turned away in their pursuit.

Lutheran North had dodged a bullet, holding on for a 3-2 win against an upset-minded Almont squad.

Geoffrey Young drew the goalkeeping assignment for Almont that day. Young finished with 10 saves.
