ALMONT — Host Almont tied defending Division 3 state semifinalist Richmond, 5-5, in a Blue Water Area Conference boys' soccer battle last Wednesday afternoon.

The contest lasted 110 minutes of playing time, including a pair of scoreless overtime sessions.

With the decision, Almont goes to 7-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 as far as BWAC matchups are concerned.

"We knew coming in that we had a shot at beating them," Almont Coach Djon Camaj said. "Had it not been for a pair of opening half penalty kicks which Richmond scored on the game would not have gone to overtime," he noted.

"Today we showed we can compete with the best teams in the league. I knew this was what our team is capable of doing once they put their minds to it."

In Wednesday's battle, Almont and Richmond ended the opening half of play with identical three-goal totals.

The second half would see Almont collect two goals and Richmond match that output.

That was followed by a pair of scoreless overtime sessions, leaving it a 5-5 outcome when the final second ticked off the clock.

Kyle McNeil (set up by Martin Camaj), Ben McNally (unassisted) and Austin Kennedy (unassisted) netted Almont's opening half goals.

McNally (set up by Kennedy) and Connor Young (via a penalty kick) supplied Almont's second half tallies.

Geoffrey Young handled the goalkeeping chores for Almont. Young was credited with 17 saves.
