ALMONT — Almont trounced host Lakeville, 56-7, in a non-league varsity football contest last Thursday night.

With the decision, Almont moves to 1-0 overall. Lakeville falls to 0-1 this season.

"We set the tone early," Almont Coach Jeremy Ferman said. "Neal Zott returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown," he noted.

"That gave us the momentum and we did not give it up. It was a good way to start the season. We know we will have to play even better next week if we are to defeat Richmond."

In Thursday's contest, Almont charged out to a 21-0 advantage after one quarter was history.

Quarter number two saw Almont dominate as well.

Aided by a 21-0 edge there, Almont increased their lead to 42-0 at the halftime break.

Almont then outscored Lakeville 14-7 the rest of the way, closing out a lopsided 56-7 win.

The victorious Almont side produced their 56-point output aided by a Neal Zott 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown (followed by an accurate extra-point boot from Ben McNally); a Garrett Savage nine-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra-point kick by McNally); a Steve McLure 12-yard touchdown run (followed by an accurate extra-point boot from McNally); a Savage three-yard touchdown tote (followed by a successful extra-point kick by McNally); a Ben Strouse 11-yard return of a blocked punt for a touchdown (followed by an accurate extra-point boot from McNally); a five-yard touchdown run by McClure (followed by a successful extra-point kick by McNally); a 76-yard touchdown run by McClure (followed by an accurate extra-point boot from McNally); and an Addam Wierbicki 62-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra-point kick by McNally). Those tallies came with 11:47 showing on the first quarter clock; 6:09 before the opening quarter was to end; with 1:26 showing on the first quarter clock; 3:57 before the second quarter was to end; with 2:51 showing on the second quarter clock; 36 seconds before halftime; with 9:01 showing on the fourth quarter clock; and 1:21 before the fourth quarter was to end.

A Trevor Komar to Michael Fox 37-yard touchdown pass and a Fox extra-point kick accounted for Lakeville's seven points. That score came with 3:12 showing on the fourth quarter clock.

On the evening, Zott completed two of three pass plays for 15 yards as Almont's quarterback. He threw zero interceptions en route to those numbers.

Dillon Melly (an eight-yard catch) and Patrick Russell (a seven-yard reception) were the targets Zott sought out

The Almont ground attack accumulated 396 yards on 37 totes.

Wierbicki (eight rushes for 153 yards), McClure (141 yards on 15 totes), Savage (10 rushes for 85 yards), Zott (17 yards on three totes) and Kyle Pilarski (one rush for zero yards) made that output possible.

Jake Ferrell (six solos and two assists) led Almont's defense. Tom Chilcote (six solos and one assist) and Strouse (four solos and one assist) made their presence felt as well.

Almont will look to make it two wins in as many starts when it hosts Richmond in a Blue Water Area Conference clash this Friday. The confrontation lists a 7 p.m. starting time.
