Imlay City, Capac open their seasons

Battle to a split in first tournament of the year

TRI-CITY AREA — The Imlay City and Capac varsity volleyball teams posted 3-2-2 and 1-3-3 marks, respectively, last Saturday at the Imlay City Tournament.

Imlay City opened their seven-match tournament run with a 25-18, 25-21 win against Sacred Heart. That was followed by a 23-25, 11-25 setback to Port Huron Northern; a 23-25, 25-19 split with Armada; a 24-26, 25-23 split with Capac; a 25-14, 25-6 victory over Clintondale; a 25-21, 25-23 triumph against Marine City; and a 24-26, 23-25 loss to Lutheran North.

Kelsey Bosch handled the bulk of Imlay City's setting responsibilities that day. Her assist total was not available.

Millie Velez (31 kills) and Taelor Webb (21) supplied Imlay City's top hitting numbers. They were backed by Jaclyn Jerzewski (18 kills), Alyssa Dawson (13), Marcella Alu (11) and Allison Gass (six).

From a defensive stand-

point, Brooke Medaugh led Imlay City with a 76-dig performance. Samantha Juip (46 digs), Spencer Seaman and Dawson (23 each), Alu (21), and Ashley Dockham (12) supported her showing.

Webb and Gass furnished the best Imlay City solo block totals, contributing five apiece. The remaining Spartan blocks went to Velez (four) and Alu (three).

Capac started their seven-match tournament stint with a 16-25, 25-17 split versus Armada. That was followed by a 25-20, 24-26 split with Sacred Heart; a 25-23, 24-26 split versus Imlay City; a 24-26, 22-25 loss to Marine City; a 21-25, 15-25 setback to Port Huron Northern; a 25-15, 25-16 win against Clintondale; and a 9-25, 19-25 loss to Lutheran North.

Charlotte Clark paced Capac with 14 aces that day. The Chiefs also received aces courtesy of Nicole Gilbert and Abby Aguinaga (six each), Megan Beischer (five), Ashley Mousseau (four) along with Alexis Folan, Sabrina Connell and Taylor Sinda (one apiece).

Gilbert and Folan shared Capac's playmaking responsibilities. They finished with 48 and 15 assists, respectively.

Clark (26) plus Sinda and Mousseau (21 each) furnished the top Capac kill outputs. Laura Pewinski (10 kills), Cassie Spencer and Katelyn Kain (three apiece), Gilbert (two) and Folan (one) supported their performances.

From a defensive standpoint, Clark led Capac with 40 digs. Connell (31), Aguinaga (27), Beischer (24), Mousseau (16), Sinda (three), Gilbert and Kain (two each) and Folan (one) contributed the remaining Chief digs.

Sinda tacked on the highest Capac block total, accumulating 14. She was backed by Clark (six), Gilbert (two) and Kain (one).

With Saturday's results, Imlay City is now 3-2-2 overall. Capac stands at 1-3-3 this season.
