CAPAC — Are there more Keihins to come? The village hopes so.

Capac is just one of several municipalities who's interest was peaked when the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners announced they want to purchase and begin developing a large tract of land into an eventual county industrial park.

Capac manager Chris Crary and several other municipal representatives attended the first informational meeting held June 17. It was a topic of discussion at the June 18 county commission meeting held in Capac the following day, June 18.

The board and administration says that there are few large tracts of land in the county ready for development that would attract companies. They said they are prepared to take out $5 million worth of bonds to purchase land and prepare it for industry.

"We're serious about this...it's not just a theory," Commissioner Jeff Bohm of East China said.

In other commission business:

•The county is considering the implementation of a hiring freeze. The matter was discussed but ultimately tabled.

Administrator Shaun Groden said they plan to offer early retirements to employees, but if goals for a voluntary 'workforce reduction' are not met, layoffs are possible.

Their motion would not affect positions fully funded by sources other than the general fund.
