Tri-City girls' contingent energizes West to second half winning surge

June 18, 2008TRI-CITY AREA — Almont's Chanahl Putnam and Lindsey Yaklin, Imlay City's Alizabeth Caldwell and Lindsey Van Dyk plus Capac's Brandy Bly helped the West team turn back the East squad, 61-39, in Blue Water Area All-Star Basketball Game last Thursday night.
Richmond High School is where the action unfolded.
In Thursday's matchup, the East team jumped out to an 8-2 advantage with 3:04 gone.
The next 8:44 of action saw the West deposit six points through the twines, while allowing the East four.
That made it 12-8, East, with 8:11 remaining during half number one.
The East then bounced back with a 10-7 run over the next eight minutes-plus, raising its cushion to a 22-15 at the half.
When the action resumed, the West stepped up its level of play significantly.
It was there the West, behind an tenacious defense, got the East's attention with a 12-4 run covering a 4:01 span.
That made it 27-26, West, with 15:59 to play.
That offensive flurry would serve as a preview of things to come.
The West team then ran off 23 of the next 34 points.
That staked the West to an imposing 50-37 cushion with 4:57 to play.
The East then outscored the West 12-11 the rest of the way, only to fall by a 61-39 count at game's end.
Taylor Prior, of Armada, led the West's offensive attack. She finished with 13 points.
Chanahl Putnam, of Almont, logged the next highest West scoring output. Putnam tossed in 12 points, all of that during half number two, en route to Player of the Game accolades.
The West side had nine other players connect. Their ranks consisted of Almont's Lindsay Yaklin (eight points, including a trifecta), (Memphis' Leah Semik (seven), Imlay City's Alizabeth Caldwell (six, featuring a trey), Sandusky's Cassy VanConant (five, with a triple) plus Imlay City's Lindsey Van Dyk, Yale's Muray Darling, Armada's Callan Banach, Brown City's Krislene Dye and Armada's Chelsea Villeme (two each).
Brandy Bly, of Capac, suited up for the West squad but did not score.
Brandy Ullom, of Almont, also appeared on the West side's roster. She attended the contest but did not play.
Marine City Cardinal Mooney's Ashley Allison paced the East side with nine points. She was backed by St. Clair's Megan Johnson (eight points), Marlette's Kelsey Hall (six, featuring a trey), Marlette's Kendra Smith (five), Richmond's Caitlin Walz (four) along with Richmond's Sheila Skinner, Marine City's Aubrey Smith Marine City Cardinal Mooney's Megan Vernier (two each) along with Port Huron Northern's Rachelle Randall (one).
Cros-Lex's Erin Lamb also competed for the East side but did not reach the scoring column.
