Almont relay team claims school record at girls' state finals

TRI-CITY AREA — The Almont and Capac girls' track teams turned in several outstanding performances, only to be held off the scoreboard last Saturday at the Division 3 state finals hosted by Comstock Park High School.

Ann Arbor paced the field assembled, thanks to an output of 50 points. Leroy-Pine River took second, aided by a 42-point total, and Frankenmuth tallied 39.5 for third. Hamady (39 points), Grand Rapids West Catholic (32), Hemlock (30.5), Albion (27), Benzie Central (25), Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (24), Stockbridge (22), Standish-Sterling (20), Maple Valley (19.5), Schoolcraft (19), Shepherd (17), Gladwin (15), Saginaw Valley Lutheran (14), Jackson Lumen Christi (13), Millington (11), Delton Kellogg and White Cloud (10 each), Battle Creek Pennfield, Saginaw Swan Valley and Carson City Crystal (nine apiece), Gobles (eight-and-a-half), Michigan Center (eight), Brooklyn Columbia Central (seven), Macomb Lutheran North (six-and-a-half), East Jordan, Union City, Manchester and Watervliet (six each), St. Charles and Hanover Horton (five-and-a-half apiece), Shelby, Allendale, Napoleon, Essexville Garber and Durand (five each), Sandusky (four-and-a-half), Portland, Laingsburg, Elk Rapids, Clare, Western Michigan Christian, Kent City and Parchment (four apiece), Kingsley, Elkton-Pigeon BayPort, Sanford Meridian, Saginaw Nouvel, Leslie and Hopkins (three each), Chesaning and Bronson (two-and-a-half apiece), Dundee (two), Bridgeport, Bangor, Ida, Cass City, Vandercook Lake, Quincy and Reed City (one each) along with Roscommon, Ovid-Elsie, Whitmore Lake and Lake Fenton (one half apiece) gave chase.

The Almont 3200 relay of Ellen Glinski, Scotti Langley, Lauren Deneweth and Marie Burkland turned in the most noteworthy outing among the Tri-City contingent on hand They stopped the watch at 10:11.13 en route to a 12th, smashing the previous standard of 10:15.93 the lineup ran at the Blue Water Area Conference League Meet earlier this season.

Burkland also pulled up 12th among 1600-meter run entrants and 14th out of 3200 run competitors that day. Her official finish times were not available.

Chelsea Bijansky (pole vault) and Deneweth (800 run) also represented Almont that day.

A 1600-meter relay consisting of Melissa Sawicki, Kayla Weber, Danielle Nieman and Marissa Moore supplied the best Capac result. They won their heat with an unofficial clocking of 4:20, leading to a 15th overall showing.

Sawicki (800 and 1600 runs) and Lindsey Manning (1600-meter run) also showcased their considerable skills for Capac at the Division 3 state finals. Their performances fell shy of what was needed to acquire a top-eight event placing.
