Raiders stun Sandusky team to make it back-to-back Division 3 baseball district championships

ALMONT — The Almont varsity baseball team, which entered tournament play as owners of a 4-12 mark, registered an unexpected first-place finish last Saturday at a Division 3 district hosted by Brown City High School.

With the result, Almont (6-12) advances to this Saturday's regionals at Birch Run High School. There a semifinal assignment versus the Perry awaits them.

Almont began their title-producing run with a 2-1 semifinal win against Memphis.

Tyler Wiggins and Pat Russell led Almont with a hit apiece. Jordan Stanek and Chris May added one RBI each to the Raiders' cause.

Joseph Rottman was Almont's pitcher of record. He gave up four hits and struck out two along the way.

Almont then followed it up with a 9-3 championship game victory over Sandusky.

That assured Almont of their second straight district title.

Wiggins was the winning Almont pitcher. He allowed three runs during the opening inning, but held Sandusky in check the rest of the contest.

He allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one a en route.

Stanek (three for three, three runs scored and two steals) posted the top Almont offensive numbers. He was backed by Russell (two hits and three RBI) and Mike Grundner (two hits and two RBI).
