Tower is on the rise

Construction begins on Almont's new 300,000-gallon water tower

June 04, 2008
ALMONT — So what's up? It's the direction of the village's brand-new water tower.

Construction of the 300,000-gallon tower at the Industrial Park is ongoing, with an expected completion date of October.

The 160-foot structure will eventually replace the much smaller and deteriorating water tower located downtown, behind the old fire hall.

The old tower, constructed in 1914, will be demolished as part of an overall $2.1 million project that includes more than $900,000 for water main upgrades throughout the village.

The contractor for the tower project, with a price tag of $1.1 million, is Maguire Iron Company of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Village Manager Gerald Oakes noted that demolition of the existing tower will not begin until the new tower is finished, tested and in service.

"We have to make sure the new tank has been tested out and is fully operational before that happens," said Oakes.

Once complete, the new tower will feature a slightly modified logo, that will still include the traditional apple tree and outstretched roots. The tower will also include a walk-in control/storage room at the base.

In a related matter, Air Advantage has requested to install a wireless antennae on the new tower.
