Almont nets BWAC girls' tennis crown

TRI-CITY AREA — The Almont girls' tennis team saw to it that the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament title would belong to them, accumulating 48 points to accomplish that feat on Tuesday, May 20.

When the final scores were added up, Richmond generated 43 points on the way to a second. Cros-Lex (34 points), Armada and Yale (33 each), Imlay City (25) and Algonac (10) occupied places three through seven.

Claire Turvill, Lindsey Yaklin and Chanahl Putnam, Kristen Brinker and Melissa Wilber plus Laurie Yaklin and Brooke Streber led Almont with flight championships that day. Turvill ended an unbeaten third singles run with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Cros-Lex's Lesley Sly; Lindsey Yaklin and Putnam took first doubles honors with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Richmond's Laura Ottenbacher and Kathryn Van Ham; plus Laurie Yaklin and Streber concluded an undefeated third doubles run with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Armada's Jessica DeSaele and Alyssa Goike.

Bobbi Enos and Jaime Ligon provided Almont's thirds. Enos finished her first singles run with a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) win against Imlay City's Laurin Blount and Ligon ended fourth singles action with a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 victory over Cros-Lex counterpart Kaitlyn Trump.

Holly Hanson and Sierra Grant added a fourth to Almont's cause. They wrapped up their fourth doubles stint with a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 3-6 loss to the Yale combination of Hayley Kavanaugh and Kaitlyn Bowman.

For Imlay City, Becca Hibbler and Kayde Gudzikowski notched the best showing. They wound up third at first doubles, thanks to a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph against the Yale team of Karen Bade and Kelsey Brown.

Imlay City also received fourths courtesy of Blount and Anita Almendarez. The former bowed out with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-7 (7-9) first singles setback to Almont's Bobbi Enos and the latter ended her third singles stint with a 1-6, 4-6 loss to Richmond's Bobbi Bercel.

Final BWAC Dual Match Standings - 1) Almont 6-0, 7 points; 2) Cros-Lex and Richmond, 4-1-1 each, 5.5 points apiece; 4) Armada, 3-3, 4 points; 5) Yale, 2-4, 3 points; 6) Imlay City, 1-5, 2 points; and 7) Algonac, 0-6, one point.

Note - The Blue Water Area Conference Tournament and dual matches count 50 percent each toward the league title.

Almont, which won both, ends the season as outright BWAC champions.
