Raiders record a second place in track region

ALMONT — The Almont girls' track team brought home a second-place finish last Saturday from a Division 3 regional hosted by New Haven High School.

When the final scores were added up, Lutheran North's 196-point total proved best. They were followed by Almont (66 points), Detroit Communication and Media Arts (65), Livonia Clarenceville (50), Clawson and Allen Park Cabrini (44 each), Mount Clemens (43), Armada (36), Madison Heights Bishop Foley (30.5), Detroit Community (26), Detroit Cleveland Intermediate (25) and New Haven (six).

The top-two placewinners in each event, plus anyone who bests a state set clocking, height or distance advances to the Division 3 state finals. That meet is slated for May 31 at Comstock Park High School.

Chelsea Bijansky, pole vault, 7 feet 8 inches; along with Marie Burkland, 1600 (5:26.51) and 3200-meter (12:12.33) runs; led Almont with individual event firsts.

Lauren Deneweth, 800 run, 2:30.53; provided the lone Almont individual event second.

The Almont 3200-meter relay of Scotti Langley, Ellen Glinski, Burkland and Deneweth pulled up second as well, requiring 10:26.66 to cover the territory.

Almont's 1600 relay of Jolie Wycinski, Langley, Burkland and Deneweth generated a third. They were timed in 4:36.03.

Langley, 1600-meter run, 5:44.44; checked in with the lone Almont fourth.

Sam Gomez, discus, 79 feet; and Glinski, 3200 run, 13:37.82; gave Almont sixths.

The Almont 800 relay added a seventh. They stopped the watch at 2:05.84.

Bijansky, long jump, 13 feet 8 inches; rounded out the list of Almont placewinners with an eighth.
