Dryden woman a finalist in WRIF-FM contest

Dryden’s Kristy Cole is in running to be WRIF-FM’s ‘Riff Rock Girl.’
April 16, 2008
DRYDEN — Could it actually be true? Is there really a girl who's "a little bit country and a little bit rock-n-roll?"

Kristy Cole might just fit the bill, though from the professional look of her portfolio photos she's all woman, and the only thing "country" about her is her hometown roots in Dryden.

The 24-year-old aspiring model has a look that rocks—and she's on the area's rockin-est Web site to prove it.

Cole is a finalist in the WRIF-FM 'Riff Girl' contest. As such, she's vying for a year's contract that includes air time, events and concerts and a whopping $40,000 from the popular classic rock radio station.

"It's pretty exciting," Cole says of making the cut.

She tried out last Wednesday with a host of other hopefuls at Ashley's Bar in Westland. After a photo shoot and an interview, Cole was told she'd made it into the top 32. That number will be narrowed down to 16 by votes via the Internet at Local fans can click onto the 'Riff Rock Girl' link and cast their vote for hometown favorite 'Kristy C.'

Cole, a business student at Oakland University, began modeling when she was 17 years old. Though she juggles school and a job at Scott Ockerman's State Farm Insurance Agency in Lake Orion, Cole makes time to seize opportunities to further her career in front of the camera.

"Obviously I'd like to make it a full-time career," Cole says, adding that she works with four agencies in Michigan.

It's been a lifelong dream, she says, and it's one that she's willing to work hard for.

"I keep in shape, play basketball and work out regularly," Cole says. "I love to run, too. I eat right, and try to keep up with the day-to-day fashion trends."

Her work has paid off, too. In the past she's won the Elite Model Look contest, participated in New York Fashion Week, a variety of runway shows in Michigan and was signed on by Stoly's and Malibu liquor companies.

Along with the success comes some disappointment, Cole says, but she does not get discouraged.

"Yes, there's rejection and it's always hard. But my advice is don't give up, keep going," she says. "Modeling is hard but if you want it badly enough, you can do it."

Admittedly, Cole says, being a successful model requires a certain look. But landing jobs and finding success go beyond the surface.

"It's about personality," she says. "Yes, it has a lot to do with what you look like but who you are as a person is just as important. A bad attitude won't get you very far."

Confidence and good humor also help, Cole adds, traits that she believes have helped her so far.

"I'm an outgoing person, I just love people and I love life," she says.

Voting on WRIF's Web site ends on Thurs., April 16. Visit and click on 'Riff Rock Girl' to cast your vote. Kristy Cole is listed as 'Kristy C.'
