Almont nets title in season opener

ALMONT — The Almont girls' tennis team (no. 4, Division 4) opened their 2008 campaign with a first-place finish last Friday at the Portland Late Night Tournament.

East Lansing is where the action unfolded.

When the final scores were announced, Almont's 21-point total was tops. Portland pulled up second, aided by a 13-point output, and Battle Creek Pennfield tallied 12 for third. Greenville (two points) rounded out the field assembled.

Michelle Fox (second singles) and Claire Turvill (third singles) provided Almont with individual flight titles that day. Fox started things off with a 8-3 win against a Greenville foe; picked up an 8-2 round two victory over a Portland counterpart; then registered an 8-6 triumph versus a Battle Creek Pennfield adversary. Turvill opened with an 8-6 win over a Battle Creek Pennfield rival; rolled to an 8-0 victory against a Greenville foe; and claimed an 8-4 triumph over a Portland counterpart.

The number one doubles team of Lindsay Yaklin and Chanahl Putnam won their flight as well. Their path to the title began with an 8-1 win against a Greenville combination; was followed by an 8-6 victory over a Portland team; and finished with an 8-4 outcome versus a Battle Creek Pennfield combination.

Almont's second doubles team of Christiana Simian and Jaime Ligon collected a number one showing as well. Their tournament run opened with an 8-3 triumph against a Battle Creek Pennfield team; was followed by an 8-1 win over a Greenville combination; and concluded with an 8-4 victory against a Portland team.

The Almont third doubles team of Kristen Brinker and Melissa Wilber also claimed flight honors. Their successful stint began with an 8-5 win against a Portland combination; was followed by an 8-6 victory over a Battle Creek Pennfield team; and wrapped up with an 8-0 rout of a Greenville combination.

Bobbi Enos (first singles) and Courtney Braun (fourth singles) gave Almont individual flight seconds. Enos started things off with an 8-2 win against a Portland opponent; was followed by a 2-8 setback to a Battle Creek Pennfield adversary; and ended with an 8-1 victory over a Greenville foe. Braun opened with a 2-8 loss to a Portland rival; was followed by an 8-6 win against a Battle Creek Pennfield counterpart; and wrapped up with an 8-2 triumph over a Greenville foe.

The fourth doubles combination of Laurie Yaklin and Brooke Streber added a second to Almont's cause. Their tournament run began with a an 8-0 win against a Greenville team; was followed by a 5-8 loss to a Portland combination; and concluded with an 8-3 victory over a Battle Creek Pennfield team.
