'Mania' will return with a vengeance

As chamber of commerce bows out, others step up to coordinate event

March 26, 2008
IMLAY CITY — Never fear. The Maniacs are still coming!

Those worried that Garage Sale Mania would be canceled after the Chamber of Commerce announced it would not organize a 2008 event can rest easily again.

The communitywide garage sale is now set for May 1-3, after a host of individuals and organizations stepped forward to assume its coordination and assure its future.

For more than a decade, Garage Sale Mania has served as a kickoff to springtime and another season of garage sales.

Typically, hundreds of residents and visitors fill the city's streets on the first weekend in May, all in search of bargains and one-of-a-kind finds. Many of them mark the dates of the annual event on their calendars, lest they miss out.

When Imlay City Area Chamber of Commerce Director Cynthia Pankala announced last week that another organization would have to coordinate the event, there was no shortage of takers.

Pankala says her phone rang off the hook with calls from individuals and groups willing to help out.

Among those quick to offer financial support and personal assistance were the Imlay City Rotary Club, Jeff Liebler Insurance of Imlay City, Dennis and Pat Collison, Walt Bargen of CSB Bank, and others.

As a result, this year's Garage Sale Mania will go on as originally planned, says Pankala.

"My office lines were deluged with residents who said they wanted to help keep this event alive," said Pankala. "I was confident that there would still be a Garage Sale Mania."

Pankala said the Rotary Club has agreed to underwrite the promotional and advertising costs for the event.

She is particularly pleased that the Collisons will serve as Garage Sale Mania co-chairpersons, while representing the Rotary Club.

"Pat is the former director of the (Imlay City) chamber of commerce and was the original organizer of Garage Sale Mania," said Pankala. "We're glad to have her back.

"The chamber is proud to pass the baton to all of these organizers," she said. "I want to thank the community for responding to this need in such a big way."
