IMLAY TWP. — A 36 year-old Rule Rd. man was rushed to Lapeer Regional Hospital Wednesday morning after allegedly shooting himself in the abdomen.
The man, yet to be identified, had barricaded himself in an abandoned shed near his residence with a pistol around 3 a.m.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Deparment Special Response Team and negotiators were called in to assist the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department.
Around 10:30 a.m., officers heard a single gunshot. Members of the Special Response Team used their tank-like personnel carrier to approach the shed and using an array of other special equipment managed to locate the man who was unresponsive on the ground.
Paramedics with Lapeer County EMS were called in to treat the man and he was taken away by ambulance a few minutes later.
According to Lapeer County Sheriff Ron Kalanquin, the man was allegedly distraught over marital problems.
The incident occured only yards away from the former home of Dr. Kurt Henkel, who last January, barricaded himself and his wife, Amber in their Country Pride Lane home for several hours before surrendering to police. Several of the same members of the Oakland County Special Response Team also responded to that incident in 2007.
