Wegner takes sixth in state, locking up All-State plaudits

Guerrero, Kulman fall short of top-eight finish at Palace

TRI-CITY AREA — Capac senior heavyweight Alex Wegner locked up a sixth-place finish in his weight class last Thursday through Saturday at the Division 3 individual wrestling state finals.

The Palace of Auburn Hills served as the venue for the competition.

Wegner began his successful run against Ishpeming junior Zach Heikkila on Thursday. Those grapplers headed into the fray sporting 57-4 and 18-15 marks, respectively.

When their confrontation ended, it was Wegner who had emerged victorious aided by a pin with 1:03 gone.

The following day Wegner squared off versus Muskegon Orchard View junior Cody VanDonkelaar, who entered their bout as an owner of a 39-5 record.

It was there Wegner raised his tournament mark to 2-0, collecting a win via the pinfall route with 3:10 elapsed.

That meant Wegner would face Essexville-Garber senior David O'Neil, who took a 41-0 mark into their match, next.

The encounter drew to a close with O'Neil, the eventual state champion, winning by pin with 1:17 gone.

Those aforementioned outcomes earned Wegner a berth in Saturday's action.

It was there he faced Lake Odessa Lakewood sophomore Ryan Steverson, who was 44-10 when they collided, first.

The clash would last 2:23 with Steverson, the eventual third-place finisher, prevailing via the pinfall route.

That meant Wegner would meet Muskegon Orchard View junior Cody VanDonkelaaer, who owned a 41-7 mark, for fifth place honors.

It was there Wegner bowed out with a loss via the default route.

For his showing, Wegner garnered All-State accolades (given to the top-eight finishers in each weight class).

Wegner ended his senior season with a 59-7 mark.

Imlay City senior 130-pounder Mike Guerrero lost both of his bouts at the state finals.

Guerrero started his stint there against Caro sophomore Travis Jaster on Thursday. Those wrestlers went into the match as owners of 51-7 and 47-4 marks, respectively.

The encounter went the six-minute distance with Jaster, the eventual fifth-place finisher, registering a 6-1 triumph.

The following day Guerrero squared off versus Buchanan junior Drew Medlin, who took a 46-5 record into the battle. The clash ended with Medlin, the eventual seventh-place finisher, eking out a 5-3 win.

Guerrero concluded his senior season with a 51-9 mark.

Capac sophomore 145-pounder Brian Kulman also went 0-2 at the state finals.

Kulman opened his tournament stint against Grayling junior Cody Collen on Thursday. Those grapplers headed into the fray sporting 41-13 and 42-4 marks, respectively.

When their bout ended, Collen had prevailed by a 16-9 score.

The following day Kulman tangled with Central Montcalm junior Ethan Porter, who entered the encounter with a 49-12 record.

It was there Porter, the eventual seventh-place finisher, triumphed by pin with 2:59 gone.

Kulman finished his sophomore campaign as an owner of a 41-15 mark.
