TRI-CITY AREA — Capac will send two grapplers and Imlay City one to the Division 3 individual wrestling state finals, set for March 6-8 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

They earned the right to compete there with top-four weight class finishes last Saturday at a regional hosted by Goodrich High School.

Alex Wegner led Capac with a first-place showing. He reached the heavyweight title tilt where he pinned Birch Run's Earl Leach with 3:22 elapsed.

The outcome saw Wegner avenge a setback to Leach the previous week in a district title confrontation.

In that encounter, Wegner was pinned with 1:31 gone.

"The last time we met I got caught in a head and arm," Wegner said. "This time I made sure not to make that mistake," he noted.

"It was a great feeling to come back this week and pin him in the regional championship match. I was able to redeem myself."

He will be joined by teammate Brian Kulman at the upcoming state finals. Kulman qualified with a fourth-place finish. He advanced to the weight division's consolation final where he dropped a narrow 12-9 verdict to Millington's Sean Gravelyn.

Mike Guerrero, of Imlay City, was the other Tri-City Area grappler to move on. He placed fourth at 130 pounds.

His day on the mats drew to a close with a 12-1 loss to Richmond counterpart Brian Henke.
