Almont moves on with district win


Tops Lutheran North, 61-43, Putnam scores 29 points

ALMONT — Almont earned a 61-43 win at Lutheran North's expense in a Class B girls' district basketball opening round encounter it hosted Monday night.

With the decision, Almont (21-0) moves on to Wednesday's semifinal where Capac (1-19) will provide their opposition. That battle is slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m.

In Monday's encounter, Almont took a narrow 11-10 edge after one quarter was complete.

The second quarter would see Almont widen the gap some.

Thanks to a 13-7 advantage there, Almont took a 24-17 lead at the halftime break.

When the action resumed, Almont established even more breathing room.

Aided by a 27-15 third quarter advantage, Almont raised its lead to 51-32 at the 24-minute mark.

Lutheran North then put together an 11-10 fourth quarter rally, only to fall by a 61-43 count when the final second ticked off the clock.

Chanahl Putnam paced Almont with 29 points. She drained two triples en route.

Almont had six others connect. Their ranks consisted of Lindsey Yaklin (16 points, including four trifectas), Nikki Heim (eight) along with Chelsea Bijansky, Brandy Ullom, Tasha Evans and Jolie Wycinski (two each).

Allison Krupp and Kari Wanglin proved the toughest Lutheran North players to contain. Krupp generated 10 points, featuring a pair of treys, and Wanglin furnished 10.
