February 06, 2008 ALMONT — The Almont wrestling team went 4-1 en route to a third-place finish last Saturday at the Memphis Tournament.
Almont opened their five-match stint with a 56-13 win against Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest. That was followed by a 39-39 outcome versus DeLasalle (Almont prevailed on the tiebreaker); a 40-33 loss to Lakeshore; a 66-18 victory over Memphis; and a 57-24 triumph against Lutheran Westland.
When the final standings were posted Almont, DeLasalle and Lakeshore all checked in with 4-1 marks.
That meant a tiebreaker, based on total points allowed would have to be used to determine the team placings.
When that information was taken into account, DeLasalle claimed first and Lakeshore took second. Almont wound up third.
Nick Curtis (130) led Almont with a five-win outing.
Taylor Lawrence (119), Nick Vassallo (135), Tim Zehnder (140) and Josh Kunath (152) provided Almont with four victories apiece.
Roger Savonne (103), Dylan Creger (125), Sean Cooper (145), Chuck White (189) and Marcus Hudson (285) contributed three triumphs each to Almont's cause.
Steve Sabbe (145) and Steve Mack (171) gave Almont a pair of wins that day.
Almont also received one victory apiece courtesy of Corey Downing (112), Steve Savonne (135) and Mike Owen (160).
