Former hometown was backdrop for campaign

This—from the small-town girl who would undoubtedly have flunked Poli Sci had I taken it in college (and I wouldn't have—taken it—I mean)—and who remembers very little from government class in high school except my final grade, the teacher's name, and the term "muckraking":

It's Thursday morning. We've heard from Iowa. For a voter as politically undecided as I am to hail from the state—alas—the city from which the candidates made their plea for support, is rather serendipitous. Des Moines is less than an hour from my parents' home, I would gauge, and I have never thought it surprising that political news happened there. But when a candidate spoke from a coffee shop in Pella, and the camera crew focused through the restaurant window onto the picturesque windmill in the city square, the caucus political arena was no longer business as usual—out there somewhere. It was a mile from Mom and Dad's house. It was where my peers do business every day.

"That's MY town!" I screeched to Mike, who had just left the room, I yelled; "Come, quick! Pella's on the news."

The namedropping accompanying the footage made political sense—I would call it brilliant, in fact—but I've all but forgotten which candidate, which party, even, was being promoted.

Even as I say that, I realize I haven't forgotten—that I remember the name. Of one of the town spokespersons. Of the candidate. And I know without being told which planks of the platform have just had spikes driven deeper. Only time will tell how that, along with all the other rhetoric and stomping, plays out, I think.

By now, we know the outcome of the Iowa caucus, and New Hampshire has weighed in, providing the counterbalance I anticipated, thus outlining the true nature of the race; and by the time we all read this, we in Michigan will have spoken.

P.S. I'm pretty sure the only reason I even remember the term "muckraking" is because it all at once took on meaning when I moved to Imlay City.
