Capac wrestling threepeats as Blue Water champs

TRI-CITY AREA — The Capac wrestling team accumulated 198 points en route to a number one showing last Saturday at the Blue Water Classic hosted by Port Huron Northern High School.

It marked the third straight year that Capac has claimed honors at the event.

Marysville's 178-point total proved second best that day. Imlay City ranked third, thanks to a 169-point output. They were followed by Cros-Lex (168 points), Yale (165), Port Huron Northern (148), Port Huron High (144), Anchor Bay 'B' team, (120.5), Algonac (102), Richmond 'B' team (91.5), Brown City (72.5), Cass City (69), Sandusky (47), New Haven (43) and Memphis (33).

Alex Wegner led Capac with a top finish at heavyweight. Wegner closed out his unbeaten run with a pin 1:02 into his bout versus Marysville's Mike Verbeke.

Andrew Bollaert, Derek Gottschalk and Shawn Kaiser furnished Capac's seconds. Bollaert advanced to the 103-pound championship clash where he dropped a 13-7 verdict to Richmond 'B' team's Brandon Pawlak; Gottschalk reached the title tilt at 145 pounds where he was pinned by Cros-Lex's Donnie Corby with 1:12 elapsed; and Kaiser gained admittance to the 215-pound championship clash where he was pinned by Cros-Lex counterpart Adam Pallaschi with 1:43 gone.

Dan Patton notched the lone Capac third that day. Patton stopped Marysville's Joel Angore with 3:40 gone to accomplish the feat.

Clay Colwell, Brian Kulman and Thomas Bolday supplied Capac's fourths. Colwell closed out his stint when he was pinned by Cros-Lex counterpart Jacob Tanner with 3:43 elapsed at 140 pounds; Kulman ended his run with a 19-8 setback to Yale 152-pounder David Hill; and Bolday finished his stint with a 19-8 loss to Yale's Mike Tyranski at 171 pounds.

Eric Bollaert gave Capac a fifth that day, completing his stint with a 10-4 win against Richmond 'B' team rival Grant Hafner.

Arthur Andrade added a sixth to Capac's cause. Andrade wrapped up his run at 189 pounds when he was pinned by Memphis adversary Mark Clark with 1:30 elapsed.

Kevin Ahrens paced Imlay City that day, collecting a first. Ahrens watched an undefeated day on the mats at 125 pounds draw to a close with a 4-0 win against Port Huron Northern counterpart Garrett Willis.

Victor Leon, Mike Guerrero and Ryan Baker provided Imlay City with second-place showings. Leon reached the 119-pound title encounter where he fell by a 15-11 count to Port Huron High's John Knisley; Guerrero gained admittance to the 130-pound championship confrontation where was pinned by Yale's Andrew Schutt with 1:35 gone; and Baker advanced to the 160-pound title encounter where he dropped a 9-7 outcome to Cros-Lex rival Zach Fabian.

Ethan Walker provided Imlay City with a fourth. Walker concluded his stint with a 9-4 setback to Port Huron Northern's Trent McGuffin at 145 pounds.

Joshua Timmer gave Imlay City a fifth that day, accomplishing the feat with a 11-2 triumph against Port Huron Northern 215-pounder Coti Miller.

Mason Day, Kevin Shene and Dane Walker added sixths to Imlay City's cause. Day concluded 140-pound action when he was pinned by New Haven's Ryan Matthews with 1:30 gone; Shene watched his run at 152 pounds end with a 14-1 loss to Port Huron Northern's Colby Brooks; and Walker finished heavyweight action when he was pinned by Yale's Steve Lams with 1:33 gone.
