IMLAY CITY — Fire Chief Kip Reaves credits the quick work of firefighters from Imlay City, Almont and Attica for containing a Thursday morning blaze at Hickory Square Apartments.

Reaves said the fire was discovered in the wall between two apartments in unit 1920 by maintenance workers. The fire eventually spread to the attic area above the units.

"That's where the firefighters got it stopped," Reaves said.

"They did an excellent job. I can't say that enough."

Families from eight units in the building were displaced as a result, Holly Smith, a leasing specialist with Hickory Square said. Volunteers with the American Red Cross responded to the scene that same afternoon to assist the victims.

Smith suggests that donations for the families be forwarded to the Red Cross. The Hispanic Service Center will also collect donations of food, clothes and furniture earmarked for the 'Hickory Square residents.'
