January 09, 2008 CAPAC — Cliff Lietz, a Capac High School graduate, was announced as the Former Play of Honor Award recipient at the Harry C. Moore Classic Basketball Tourna-ment on Friday, December 28.
He joins Jim Seidell (2004), Dale Mills (2005) and Raymond "Ricky" Hawks as winners of the award.
His two-year varsity career saw plenty of success. It was there the Capac Chiefs were no strangers to the winner's circle, going a combined 32-9 over the stretch.
As a junior during the 1966-67 season, Lietz helped Capac put together a 14-6 overall record.
That campaign saw Capac claim a district title, thanks to a 53-45 championship game triumph against Memphis.
Capac then bowed out of tournament play with a regional semifinal loss, falling to Detroit Country Day by a 75-54 count at Grand Blanc High School.
He finished his debut campaign at the varsity level as an All-STA first team selection, an All-Blue Water Area Class C second team choice and an honorable mention All-State pick.
The following season Capac fared even better, winding up with an 18-3 mark. It was there the Chiefs outscored their opposition 69.5 to 57.2 on the average.
Their accomplishments included a top finish at the Yale Christmas Tournament; a district title and a share of the Southern Thumb Assoc-iation championship with Anchor Bay.
Capac, which rolled to a 104-70 victory over Rich-mond in the district title tilt, watched their successful season draw to a close with a 71-60 loss to Orchard Lake St. Mary's in a regional semifinal clash.
He concluded his senior season as an All-STA first team pick and honorable mention All-State choice.
Lietz also was named to the All-Blue Water Area Class C team, joining Brown City's Jerry Sauder, Reese's Bob Zwerk, North Huron's Fred Ligrow and Deckerville's Bruce Tanton on the list.
He finished his two-year stint on Capac's ballclub with 744 points and 513 rebounds. It took him 40 games to log those credentials.
