CAPAC — Brown City made non-league varsity boys' basketball rival Capac absorb a 50-40 loss in a semifinal round encounter last Thursday night at the Harry C. Moore Classic Tournament hosted by North Branch High School.
With the decision, Brown City (5-1) advances to a Friday, December 28 championship clash where it will meet North Branch. Capac, who falls to 4-1 this season, is slated to square off versus Marlette for third place honors. Those matchups list 7:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. starting times, respectively.
In Thursday's encounter, Brown City and Capac ended the opening quarter with matching eight-point outputs.
The next eight-minute stretch would see Brown City hit for 15 points and Capac tally 10.
That staked Brown City to a 23-18 advantage at the halftime break.
When the action reumed, Brown City went on an 11-5 run encompassing a 4:50 span to start the second half. The offensive outburst left the Green Devils holding a 34-23 cushion with 3:10 showing on the third quarter clock.
Capac then bounced back with a 7-3 run over the next three minutes-plus.
That made it 37-30, Brown City, after three quarters were complete.
Brown City then outpointed Capac by a 13-10 count the rest of the way, leaving the floor with a 50-40 win to their credit.
Donovan Ogboh (20 points) and Jack McPhail (14, featuring a trey) proved Brown City's top offensive threats. Jon Muxlow added eight points to the Green Devils' cause.
Dan Jackson paced Capac with 13 points. The Chiefs also had Kevin Bollaert (seven points), Tino Siewert (six), Joe Frazier (five, with a triple), Joe Harvey (five) plus A.J. Rank and Jon Carroll (two each) reach the scoring column.
