Imlay City, Almont split mat stints in non-conference wrestling action

TRI-CITY AREA — The Imlay City and Almont wrestling teams each fashioned 1-1 marks in non-league action last Wednesday at Imlay City High School.

Imlay City started their two-match stint with a 48-27 triumph against Lakeville.

Josh Timmer led Imlay City with a win via the pinfall route. Timmer took 30 seconds to stop Hunter Kircher at heavyweight.

Kevin Ahrens (125), Mike Guerrero (130), Zach Burns (135), Mason Day (140), Nelson Pena (171) and Tim Keillor (189) gave Imlay City six team points apiece as well. They proved void beneficiaries.

Nick Nivison and Ethan Walker added victories by decision to Imlay City's cause. The former secured a 6-5 overtime triumph against 145-pound foe Cecil Batchelor and the latter notched a 13-8 win over Anthony Davis at 152 pounds.

Later that evening, Imlay City dropped a 37-32 verdict to Caro.

Josh Scillian (103), David Turner (119), Guerrero (130) and Keillor (189) paced Imlay City with victories by void.

Ahrens provided Imlay City with five team points, accomplishing the feat with a convincing 17-1 triumph over Zach Rocheleau at 125 pounds.

Dane Walker was the other Imlay City grappler who prevailed, eking out a 7-5 win against heavyweight counterpart David Johnson.

Almont began their two-match stint with a 43-33 setback to Caro.

Tim Zehnder and Mike Owen registered Almont's victories via the pinfall route there. Zehnder took 2:58 to dispose of Aaron Hildinger at 140 pounds and Owen required 45 seconds to stop 160-pound rival Cody Genefe.

Nick Justice (103), Corey Downing (112) and Taylor Lawrence (119) notched Almont's triumphs by void.

Sean Cooper was the other Almont grappler who generated a favorable verdict, earning a 9-4 win against Mike Daniel at 160 pounds.

Later that night, Almont bounced back with a 47-33 victory over Lakeville.

Josh Kunath paced Almont with a triumph by pin. Kunath needed 57 seconds to turn back 152-pound adversary Anthony Davis.

Dylan Creger (125), Nick Curtis (130), Nick Vassallo (135), Jason Feys (140), Steve Mack (171) and James Pierce (189) gave Almont wins by void.

Lawrence was the other Almont grappler who emerged victorious, claiming a 17-0 victory over Andrew Smith at 119 pounds.

With the decisions, Imlay City goes to 8-8 overall. Almont now stands at 6-3 this season.
