TRI-CITY AREA — Marie Burkland pulled up fifth, aided by a 20:42.5 time, and her effort sparked the Almont girls' cross country team to a fourth-place showing last Saturday at a Division 3 regional.

Bad Axe High School is where the action unfolded.

When the final scores were added up, Macomb Lutheran North's 46-point total proved best. Caro took second, aided by a 76-point total, and Armada scored 81 for third.

Those three schools, along with anyone who secured a spot among the top-15 finishers continue their postseason path this Saturday at the Division 3 state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. That race lists a 10:30 a.m. starting time.

Almont (121 points), Bad Axe (128), Marlette (164), Capac (186), Vassar (190), Mayville (194), Imlay City (221) and Otisville-Lakeville (283) held down places four through 11 when the final standings were announced at Saturday's regional.

Lauren Deneweth, ninth, 20:53.3; sported the next quickest Almont outing. Ellen Glinski, 27th, 21:50.8; Lexi Sheehan, 37th, 22:40.7; and Deniz Kyte, 53rd, 24:49.4; completed the Raiders' top-five.

Melissa Sawicki headlined for Capac, stopping the watch with a lightning-quick 19:55.2 effort. Her performance was good enough for a considerable 23.1 second margin of victory over her closest pursuer, Macomb Lutheran North's Erika DeVriendt.

With her number one showing, Sawicki became the first Capac girl to win a regional cross country title since Julie Pelak got the job done during the 2001 campaign.

Kylie Miller turned in Capac's next best showing at last Saturday's meet. Miller crossed the finish-line 24:08.5 after the race began, good enough for 45th. The Chiefs also counted results from Ashley Callewaert, 46th, 24:15.8; Mackenzie Hackelberg, 52nd, 24:49.2; and LaRae Hemstrum, 54th, 25:00.7.

Mandy Lacertosa, 33rd, 22:08.5; paced Imlay City. Sarah Bennett, 35th, 22:35.1; Josefine Egholm, 45h, 24:35.2; Brittany Price, 58th, 25:23.8; and Olivia Leonardi, 59th, 25:26; rounded out the Spartans' top-five.
