Almont girls take seventh at Marysville

TRI-CITY AREA — Marie Burkland stopped the watch 20:12 after the race began en route to a fifth and Lauren Deneweth pulled up eighth with a 20:34 clocking to lead the Almont girls' cross country squad to a seventh-place showing last Thursday at the Marysville Invitational.

Cros-Lex (82 points) earned team honors that day. They were followed by Marine City (105 points), Port Huron High (112), Richmond (125), Algonac (155), Yale (196), Almont (199), Anchor Bay (209), Marysville (211), Armada (223), Bad Axe (283), St. Clair (301), L'Anse Creuse (330), North Branch (332), Brown City (351), Capac (408), Lakeview (455) and Port Huron Northern (483).

Ellen Glinski supplied the next swiftest Almont performance. Glinski wound up 30th, thanks to a time of 22:22. Lexi Sheehan, 23rd, 24:46; and Kelsey Butler, 83rd, 25:17; rounded out the Raiders' top-five.

Melissa Sawicki, 15th, 21:01; paced Capac. The Chiefs also counted results from Mackenzie Hackelberg, 74th, 24:58; Larae Hemstrom, 94th, 26:25; Kylie Miller, 108th, 27:46; and Danielle Nieman, 117th, 32:09.

In the boys' portion of the meet, Capac registered a 10th.

St. Clair's 35-point total set the pace. Port Huron High (96 points), Yale (137), Cros-Lex (164), Richmond (199), L'Anse Creuse (208), Marine City (220), Marysville (227), Algonac (245), Capac (253), Port Huron Northern (272), Armada (281), Anchor Bay (298), Brown City (335), Bad Axe (341), Almont (348) and Lakeview (416) gave chase.

North Branch also sent runners to the starting-line but did not field a complete squad.

Brendan Pfeifer, third, 17:12; was the first Capac runner to finish. Chris Paluch, 30th, 18:43; Jeremy Paluch, 63rd, 19:56; Ben St. Onge, 75th, 20:16; and Shane O'Connor, 86th, 20:50; supported his performance.

Don Tobias, 27th, 18:38; Stephen Savonne, 65th, 19:59; Eric Jacobs, 81st, 20:29; Nick Vassallo, 84th, 20:48; and Joel Bock, 96th, 21:19; comprised Almont's list of scorers that day.
