Almont tennis team nets a second at BWAC

TRI-CITY AREA — The Almont and Imlay City boys' tennis teams pulled up second and sixth, respectively, last Saturday at the Blue Water Area Conference Tournament.

Imlay City and Almont is where the action unfolded.

When the final results were tallied, Richmond's 49-point total proved best. They were followed by Almont (43 points), Yale (34), Cros-Lex (33), Armada (30), Imlay City (23) and Algonac (12).

Ty Sutter and Matt Bulger led Almont with flight titles that day. Sutter reached the third singles title tilt where he earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against Richmond's Ross Stuart and Bulger advanced to the fourth singles championship where he netted a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Richmond's Matt Pozolo.

Andy Schoen, Kyle Henry and Logan McDermott plus Mike Kendziora and Jamil Saba supplied Almont's seconds. Schoen gained admittance to the title tilt at first singles where he dropped a 6-1, 6-7, 5-7 verdict to Yale's Mike Putze; Henry and McDermott advanced to the first doubles championship where they fell by a 2-6, 4-6 count to Armada's Jordan Krause and Adam Duncan; plus Kendziora and Saba reached the third doubles title encounter where they fell to the Richmond combination of Dustin Dagastino and Ryan Bissell.

Nate Zgnilec and Alex Schubert collected the lone Almont third. The Raider duo concluded their run at second doubles with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against Armada's Alex Blake and Dave Duncan.

Dan Miller added a fourth to Almont's cause. Miller's stint at second singles drew to a close with a 0-6, 0-6 loss to Yale's Curtis Prater.

Joe Rettell and Cody Campbell paced Imlay City with a second at fourth doubles. They made it to their flight's title tilt, only to fall by a 6-4, 4-6, 0-6 count.

Steve Sortor provided Imlay City with a third, finishing his stint at third singles with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 triumph against Cros-Lex counterpart Jordan Dulzo.

Mark Owen tacked on a fourth to Imlay City's cause. His run at fourth singles wound down with a 2-6, 1-6 loss to Yale's Carl Rumsey.
